In order for the Chicago Bears to get to where they hope to be in 2025, they're going to need quarterback Caleb Williams to progress to the next level in his second season. A key component in Williams' development will not only be his rapport with new head coach Ben Johnson but also his new-look offensive line with at least three new starters.
One of those new additions is Pro Bowl guard Joe Thuney, who the Bears acquired in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round pick. Chicago locked down Thuney to a two-year contract extension before he even plays in his first season with the Bears, and he'll be one of the core lineman to help guide Williams.
Having blocked for Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes in his career, Thuney will now be responsible for keeping Williams upright. After signing his extension, Thuney spoke with the media about his new quarterback and his early impressions.
"He works really hard," Thuney said. "You can tell how much he cares about this sport. He's always in here. Whenever I come in I see him and he's been doing great. So far so good.”
Not only does Thuney have the personal pedigree as one of the top offensive lineman in the NFL, being named to multiple All-Pro and Pro Bowl teams, but the quarterbacks he's protected are two of the best in NFL history.
Having won four Super Bowl championships in his career, Thuney knows what it'll take to turn the Bears into a real championship contender. Williams is the key, and so far, he's impressed his veteran lineman with the work and effort he's putting into the offseason with a rebuilt roster around him.
