BATTLE CREEK - The 'Games of the Week' in high school football in the Battle Creek readership area for Week 3:
MORE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Battle Creek Enquirer High School Football 2025: Your guide to total coverage
Scouting Report: It is 'Rivalry Week' in the city as Battle Creek Central will host crosstown-foe Lakeview at C.W. Post Field. The oldest and most consistent rivalry between city schools is Battle Creek Central vs. Lakeview. From 1963 to 1998, it was the final game of the regular season. It was one fan bases looked forward to all year, with bragging rights on the line no matter what the records were. The two meet earlier this year in a situation where, no matter what the records are, there will still be high hopes for the rest of the season. BCC owns a 33-29 advantage in the series. Yet, the Spartans have won five of the last six meetings and are 11-9 overall in the past 20 contests. Part of that recent success was last year as Lakeview took a late lead and won 22-20. BCC quarterback Lee Campbell has been a difference maker so far this season. In the Bearcats' tight loss to Everett, he had 248 yards passing and two touchdowns through the air, plus 79 yards rushing and two more scores. Isaiah Jackson has provided good burst for Lakeview at quarterback with 101 yards rushing in Game 1 against Harper Creek.
Key To the Game: It will be a battle of two offensive lines, who are each the self-described strength of their team. Battle Creek Central is led by college prospect Camari Williams, who is 6-foot-4 and 400 pounds. Lakeview has several veterans on its offensive line, including Jaymere Boykins, Carlos Suarez and Frank Bouffard. Who gets the push on their side of their side of the offensive line will probably get the win.
Scouting Report: Harper Creek is the defending champs in the Interstate 8 Conference. Coldwater is young and hungry and thinks it can make a run to the top of the league this season after being down for a few years. The Beavers begin defense of its Interstate 8 Conference title with its first league game of the season in a trip down to Coldwater. The Beavers have an eight-game winning streak in conference play after going undefeated in the I-8 last season. Harper Creek handled Coldwater 35-14 last year as the Beavers have a five-game winning streak against the Cardinals. However, Coldwater looks improved in 2025 as it is 2-0, getting wins against Sturgis and Gull Lake.
Key To the Game: How the Harper Creek defensive backfield handles the improved Coldwater passing game will be key. The Cardinals are led by junior quarterback Dracyn Foster, who set the school record for passing TDs last year. Foster accounted for nearly all of Coldwater's points in the first half in the win over Gull Lake with three touchdown passes, a touchdown run and a 2-point conversion run, all in the matter of 15 minutes of game clock. Harper Creek will have one o fthe best athletes on the field in the defensive backfield in DJ Wood, who is a two-time state hurdles champ.
Scouting Report: Pennfield ended an eight-game losing streak with a dominant 36-12 victory over Sturgis in Week 2. Pennfield plays its third straight non-conference game to open the season with a road trip to Buchanan. The Bucks have started strong at 2-0 with wins over Saugatuck and Coloma. Both Saugatuck and Coloma were playoff teams a year ago. Buchanan has been to the playoffs three straight years as Pennfield is looking for its first postseason trip since 2020.
Key To the Game: How the Pennfield defense contains the diverse Buchanan offense will be key. The Panthers are led by college prospect linebacker Gavin May, who had 15 tackles last week. He will be in charge with shadowing Buchanan quarterback Aaron York, who had three touchdowns in the win over Coloma.
Scouting Report: In a battle of 8-player division powers, Climax-Scotts is hosting Lenawee Christian. The two teams are both members of the Southern Central Athletic Association, but play in different divisions. Lenawee Christian has been to the playoffs eight straight seasons. The Cougars had a unusual down season by their standards last year at 4-5, but still made the postseason. Climax-Scotts, which won its division a year ago and went 8-1, handled Lenawee Christian 56-35 in 2024. Lenawee Christian is 2-0 with dominant wins over Memphis and Bellevue, outscoring its opponents 121-22 so far.
Key To the Game: Both 8-player division teams have high-scoring offenses. Lenawee Christian took a 48-0 lead by halftime in its Week 2 win, which included three touchdown passes. Liam Lasala had 130 yards rushing on 18 carries with four touchdowns to lead C-S in its Week 2 win. Which team keeps that offense going will win.
