ATLANTA — Auburn basketball did it again.

In an ugly affair against 5-seed Michigan, the Tigers’ season looked more than over more than once. It had shades of the same struggle they faced against 9-seed Creighton the week prior.

But just like then, the Tigers clawed out of it.

Auburn got another monstrous second-half run to seal a 78-65 victory over the Wolverines, growing to as large as 20-2 at a point, and it gave the Tigers their first Sweet 16 win since 2019.

It also punched their ticket to the Elite Eight for just the third time in program history. They’ll play 2-seed Michigan State on Saturday (4:05 p.m. CT, CBS) with a trip to the Final Four on the line.

The end of the night had little to do with him, but Johni Broome carried Auburn (31-5) most of the way. He finished with a game-high 22 points and 16 rebounds. But after picking up his fourth foul with 6:51 to go, he quickly hit the bench.

Then came Tahaad Pettiford. He finished with 20 points, but 15 of those were scored in the second half. Denver Jones followed suit, putting up 20 as well against Michigan (27-10) and turning it on the final 20 minutes. He scored 13 points in that span.

Danny Wolf was the biggest problem the Tigers faced. He tallied 20 points, but he scored his final basket with 13:06 remaining.
