Houston Astros prospect Brice Matthews accomplished a career-first Saturday night for the Triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys.

In a 14-7 win over the Salt Lake Bees (Los Angeles Angels affiliate), Matthews became just the second Space Cowboys player in history to hit for the cycle.

He completed the feat in the eight inning with a mammoth 427-foot two-run home run to left center off Bees reliever Jack Dashwood.

Matthews, the Astros No. 2 overall prospect, doubled in the first, singled in the fifth and tripled in the seventh. He finished the game going 4-for-6 with four runs and two RBI. In 35 games this season for Sugar Land, Matthews is slashing .220/.366/.366 with four home runs, 12 RBI and 14 stolen bases.

Matthews, a former standout for the University of Nebraska, was selected by Houston in the first round (28th overall) of the 2023 MLB Draft. He was the first Cornhuskers player to be taken in the first round since Alex Gordon, who went second overall to the Kansas City Royals in 2005.

During his three seasons in Lincoln, Neb., Matthews hit .305 with 32 home runs, 130 RBI and 32 stolen bases in 138 games. After struggling in his first taste of the minor-league ball in 2023, he quickly matriculated his way through the Astros farm system last season, making it from rookie ball to Triple-A.

The infielder also impressed in his second camp this spring with the big league club.

“He’s looked fantastic on and off the field,” Jacob Buffa, Astros senior director of player development and performance science told MLB.com in March.

“He’s come in confident, he’s shown some leadership abilities. He’s playing second right now, which he didn’t play last year. And he looks great at second. He’s putting together good ABs with good quality contact.”
