Q: Ira, is Andrew Wiggins just a rental? When you look at the emotion of the game, it looks like he is just passing through. I like everything he can do, but we need more. – Wilhelm.
A: To address your second thought first, this is who Andrew Wiggins is, a quiet personality who is there to support other pieces. The Warriors decided they needed more, which is why they made the trade for Jimmy Butler, and also why Wiggins came with other sweeteners, including a first-round pick. Now, regarding whether he is a rental, it has felt that way since his arrival, as much a convenient salary to be utilized for trade purposes as an anchor of the rotation. Considering a package of Terry Rozier and Duncan Robinson isn’t going anywhere on the trade market, Andrew’s salary sits right in the sweet spot for a roster altering trade. So if it seems as if he is just passing through, it could be because that becomes the ultimate outcome, through no fault of his own.
Q: Ira, regarding Game 1, it seems to me that with all this talk about needing a point guard, the Heat need another dynamic offensive guard who can create his shot and be capable of scoring 20 plus points on any night, to play alongside Tyler Herro just as the Cavaliers have Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell. – Joel, Fort Lauderdale.
A: So basically, the Heat need multiple pieces, which sort of is the story of most 37-45 10th-place teams. They need both someone who can get them into offense in the highest-pressure situations and they need someone who can create his own offense in those situations. This is not a roster that merely is one piece away. It’s not. Thus a No. 8 playoff seed again. How did Cleveland get both Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell? By losing a lot, with the lottery pick for Garland and the draft capital for Mitchell. So to answer your question, the Heat do not lose enough.
Q: Davion Mitchell needs to be in the starting lineup. We know what he can do defensively and his breakout game against Atlanta shows what he can do offensively. He is the best point guard on this roster. – Michael, North Miami Beach.
A: But he also has the ability to change the tone upon entering, which stood as a huge factor in the Heat pushing through the play-in round. And while he has been hitting his shots, he’s not necessarily a spacer. But, yes, certainly could see Erik Spoelstra considering other options with the starting spot that has been held by Alec Burks.
