Aryna Sabalenka made her frustration obvious during the June 7 French Open final.
As she battled American Coco Gauff for the title, she made loud comments, waved her racket, and seemed rattled at times. She also fought back in what some fans considered to be erratic play. At one point, the announcer said Sabalenka almost hit a ball boy with a tennis ball.
Still, she stayed in it, taking the first game, losing the second, and taking the third down to the wire. Gauff ended up prevailing, and when she did, Sabalenka gave her a hug.
Sabalenka cried from the podium after being handed the microphone following her loss. She said the loss will “hurt so much.” She said she played in “terrible conditions.” However, she also called Gauff a “better player than me.” She called her a “fighter, hard worker, so congrats to you and your team.”
She added, "I'm sorry for this terrible final," and promised to "come back stronger."
However, tennis fans on social media took issue with Sabalenka's attitude.
"Sabalenka needs to focus on reducing errors rather than unnecessarily screaming here and there," a tennis fan wrote on X.
"Is there any chance that Sabalenka will get disqualified for this continuous yelling?" a fan asked.
"The on-court emotional dynamics of Gauff and Sabalenka, and how each is navigating this is absolutely fascinating," wrote one fan, referring to Gauff's cool and collected demeanor throughout the match.
"I see they tried to rush past Aryna Sabalenka hitting the ball kid with a ball," another person wrote on X.
"Coco mentally better. Sabalenka physically better," another person wrote.
"Aryna Sabalenka was let down today (by Aryna Sabalenka)," a tennis fan noted.
"That zoomed in shot of Coco's stoic expression right after showing Sabalenka yelling at her coach," wrote another fan, of a moment when Sabalenka appeared to be yelling something at her coach in the stands.
"This Roland Garros final between Sabalenka and Gauff is absolutely horrific," wrote another.
"Why is Sabalenka yelling at her coach every time she loses a point?" wrote another person.
