Arizona State hockey gave the booming crowd something to cheer about with a 4-3 win over Minnesota Duluth in Game 1 of the NCHC quarterfinals at Mullett Arena in Tempe on Friday night.
The Sun Devils are now one win away from advancing to the semifinals next weekend in St. Paul, Minnesota.
With white towels waving around, reminiscent of the WhiteOut tradition from the heyday of the Arizona Coyotes, the Sun Devils injected joy into the game with two early goals in the first period from leading scorer Ryan Kirwan and Charlie Schoen.
UMD scored twice in the second period to tie the game at 3, but defenseman Anthony Dowd had the final say when he muscled a puck past goaltender Adam Gajan at 5:39 in the third.
