I don’t see why not. Just put that sucker on mute when you’re in the courtroom and pay attention when you’re told to.

If you ever go to calendar call, where normally it’s just attorneys and the judge, everyone is on their cell phone until their matter is called.

I’ve sat on a jury before. We deadlocked.

One of the few times that having been diagnosed with and taking meds for MDD has worked to my advantage .. Not being selected to sit on a jury. Prolly afraid I wouldn't take meds before the trial!

btw, my office mgr got hers postponed for 6 months because her sister was ill. It's pretty easy to get postponed with any kind of valid reason.

I'm kind of dismayed at the disdain for jury service displayed in this thread.

Most likely because it's a major disruption of people's lives. Pretty tough on hourly workers to lose 2 weeks wages Metro court and 3 weeks District court. I have 3 employees that it was no small deal. I have been to jury duty and had hell running my business from the courthouse. I just never was selected because of the reason I stated.

I have only been summoned for jury duty once in my life. Called the night before and was told I didn’t need to come in. I actually would like to be picked just so I can experience it.

The last time I went to one of these, I was in the lobby for some time before even getting in the court room

I'm a single dad of three kids, two young and my income is 90% commission. Jury duty is not something I have any interest in doing at this point if my life

Plus there's that burden of a Jamaican vacation looming. :D

On the one hand, I think of how I'd want real, hard-working, successful adults on my jury if I were before the court. On the other hand, I wouldn't want anyone with my fate in their hands that didn't want to be there.

For me, it's a very important sacrifice to make.
I've been summoned 5 times. I've only not served once because I was moving to another county, 350 miles away, before the date to appear.
I've been on a jury three times.

I know it is a sacrifice. But it is meant to be. I hope those who make the sacrifice, will be motivated to make sure they get it right.

I think your first sentence makes a strong case.

Yeah, the lawyers and judge are doing boring pre-trial stuff.

It wasn't the last time, but one of the times I was called up, I was still in Corrections.

Just wore my badge on my belt.

A friend just had it in California and she was allowed to tell them using an online system that she was travelling and couldn't go and they allowed her to defer for I think 6 months.

My oldest sister had it 5-6 weeks after having been a witness in a pretty serious trial. There was nothing she could do online to get a deferrment so she had to go in(she's retired) but as soon as she told them about the trial, they excused her and gave her I think a 2 year deferrment.

So they can be understanding if you follow the rules and be honest with them. In your case I'd just say I have a trip scheduled.

I will happily serve on a jury when I have the free time for stuff like that. Even my vacation is a work thing.
