Diamondbacks LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (3-5, 5.78) vs. Padres RHP Randy Vasquez (3-4, 3.79)
At Petco Park: Rodriguez had found some consistency in previous starts until July 4, when the Kansas City Royals tagged him for eight earned runs on 12 hits, including three home runs, in 4⅓ innings. ... The strikeouts have been there for him, with 87 in 15 starts. Rodriguez has had trouble keeping his pitch counts down, which is a reason he is averaging just over five innings per start. But he has shut out the Padres in his two career starts against San Diego over 11⅔ innings of work. He will be pitching at Petco Park for just the second time in his career. ... Vasquez is set for his 19th start of the season. He has not won a game since May 14 and has eight straight no-decisions. He's faced the Diamondbacks four times (three starts) with no decisions and a 2.95 earned run average. This season, Vasquez has 49 strikeouts and has issued 42 walks.
