Hard to call a 23 year old a mega bust… That said, his two years in the minors certainly haven’t justified his #12 overall pick…

I really disliked the pick obviously. I don't want a 45/45 bat in round 1. He's doing well in double A and had and excellent fall league. Being 23 is an issue though and he's basically blocked.

I don't see why anyone would see the DBacks as anything but sellers at this point. Still under .500, 4 teams to crawl over just to get to the last wild card spot. The division is already out of reach. The only thing that would change my mind is if they went on a 10-15 game winning streak right now. But that ain't gonna happen, folks. Unless of course you believe in unicorns.

Because despite being absolutely fubar'd by injuries, they are only 4 games out.

Everyone else is hating on Torey and I think this might be his best season managing outside of the world series.

He got zero credit for putting in Ginkel last game in the 9th despite his 10 ERA. Buy and give the man a chance

4 games out of the last wild card with 4 teams to crawl over. I like your optimism, but let's face it - when he brought in Stinkel last night, everyone on this forum thought he would blow it - particularly with his elevated ERA. I'm just a realist. The team has been a couple games above or below .500 for a couple of months. And with all the injuries, being a buyer at the trade deadline doesn't make a lot of sense - from the baseball business point of view. And Torey still can't manage a bullpen consistently.

I thought Ginkel would do great because he has before in that situation.

Even I, as a super analytics guy, knows that sometimes you have to trust guys who have done it before

the fact that Alek Thomas doesn’t know how to swing a baseball bat makes his glove in CF irrelevant.

Welp...almost made it back to .500. Still have a shot to split the series with the Padres. And Kelly increased his trade value once again. Are you paying attention, Hazen?

He pinch hit in the final AB

So that pinch hit was greater than 6 starters going 0 for?

It's wild how much hate Thomas gets when he basically won us the game the night before and is absolutely not the problem

Don't bitch about the positive WAR players on rookie deals. It's just nonsense

There were 4 walks in there so a stellar combined .178 OPS.

Alek Thomas though!!!

Not sure why Thomas gets mentioned tonight when all he did was pinch hit??
FWIW, when I do go there with Thomas, it is merely from the standpoint of wanting more from an everyday CF…
He is putrid at the plate - that can’t be legitimately argued. And yes, he is Allstar caliber in the field. But I’d gladly take a slight drop-off defensively for a meaningful uptick offensively…

Anyway, bummer of a loss tonight… Kelly deserved far better.

Well basically you have to hope that the draft capital invested in OF eventually pays off. I see Lourdes and his contract as a far larger problem than Thomas.

Waldschmidt probably makes a run in spring training next year and that's the Grichuk role. Slade Caldwell is basically Thomas with less power and range. Druw Jones is a better fielder but a 5x worse bat.

Carroll isn't playing CF because it's stressful on the body. McCarthy is what 28 and a mediocre CF at best

So who takes over for Thomas right now?

You could probably swing a Thomas / Robert trade since Alek grew up in the White Sox club house but he has three more years of team control and is making 793k.

Meanwhile Robert is making 40 million the next two years and has nearly a full .1 OPS worse than Thomas this year. He's two years from being a MVP candidate so that's how you justify it but it's a lot this year

So it's like Thomas / Suarez vs Robert. Give me Thomas / Suarez.

The bad teams with CF that would want Alek Thomas.

Orioles and Cedric Mullins on a 1 year rental. He's basically Alek Thomas ceiling. Great glove gets on base but he is a rental.
.
Cleveland - Nolan Jones is a negative war player with a .625 OPs

Oakland - Denzel Clark. Woof a worse glove and a sub .600 ops.

Nationals Robert Hassell and his .497 OPS

Pirates - Alexander Canario and his .621 OPS and a worse glove.

Rockies - Brenton Doyle was great last year but this year has a .591 OPS despite playing in Colorado and is 27.

Thats not getting into the good teams.

Brandon Marsh has a slightly better bat for the Phillies but sucks at CF

The Mets are trotting out Tyrone Taylor and his .570 OPS

You could do a Cedric Mullins / Felix Baustita for Thomas and Groover/Troy but that is a ton of team control for a mid market team to surrender

The whole lineup didnt show up, but I single out Alek Thomas because I'd expected him to improve at the plate by now and he's nothing more than a below average hitter. I know Herrera is trash and I cant wait until ADC came be called up to fill in the back up catcher role. McCarthy is in his own head.

I guess if our lineup was healthy he would be fine as the permanent 9 hitter in the lineup, but we're not, and he needs to step up
