Through three games this season, the Arizona Cardinals' offense has been disappointing. A top-12 unit a year ago that had a dynamic running game, scoring points and moving the ball has been tough at times. The running game has not been dynamic. There have not been many explosive plays in the passing game. They have struggled on third down.
Many question offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, his scheme and his playcalling.
Head coach Jonathan Gannon showed his unwavering support of Petzing's playcalling after the game.
"I have no problems with the offensive playcalling," Gannon told reporters postgame. "I never will. I know exactly what we are calling, so if you've got a problem with that, just look to me."
For the third straight game, the Cardinals failed to reach 300 yards of offense, gaining 260 against the 49ers. They went 5-for-15 on third down. They held the ball longer than the 49ers (34:39 to 25:21) but were outgained 355-260.
The offense has been the problem so far. However, they are 2-1, which means there is time to improve.
Now, with running back James Conner perhaps done for the season, things get even tougher.
If there is any thought to Gannon replacing Petzing at some point, based on what he said after the game, don't count on it. Gannon is going to live and die by his coordinators.
