I am going to talk to Wells Fargo and Harley Dividson Financial Division tomorrow about job possibilities. I have done computer work for about 17 years, but I worked one year as an SBA loan developer and did pretty well at it. I was even offered jobs by other firms. That job was 15 years ago. Now with my move, I really want to get back into the finance arena. Any advice anyone can give me? Another problem I have is the business I worked for is now defunct. All the jobs here want five years experience and Finance degrees. I have two bachelors in electronics and business management, and an associates in CIS. I KNOW I can do the finance related jobs, but how do I overcome the lack of experince and no Finance degree? If anyone works at these companies, can you get me any pointers or insights. Like, do I really want to work there? ;)

My wife worked in Finance for 8 years. The last five as a Loan Officer. She is now in Accounting. She talks about how much she liked Finance better, but she likes the money my accounting job gives her more??

What questions do you have?? How to get in with little experience?? My advice would be to be confident in yourself. If you don't like that I can ask.

So how is it working for Wells? Good company? I also will try the IT angle, but I am not sure my IT skills are what you guys are doing. We were pretty much a microsoft shop where I worked before. :thud:

Correct, I work for the Bank also but I am very far from being a Banker. Just an IT guy.

Do you guys program, or are you tech gurus? Everyone where I worked before told me I was too people oriented to be a programmer. I liked the tech side better, but I was a programmer pretty much al the time. :(

Any insights on the corporate atmosphere? Shirt and ties, suits? Bosses cool, or is it strees city?

No one knows me here, so I am pretty uber confident. I helped a lot of folks with their 401Ks where I worked. Even talked people into it. I like that kind of thing. :thud:

I work with Unix, Micrsoft and Linux servers and workstations. Mostly everything we are putting out now is Dell or HP based x86 Windows stuff. Nice place to work, I wear jeans to the office everyday and benefits aren't too bad

I'm a loan officer. It is amazing how quickly and easily things can be done with the omnipresence of computers in the industry. It is going to be a far cry from when you left 15 years ago. It's a whole new industry, but numbers are numbers and math is math. You gotta know numbers and math and how to proficiently use a computer and the internet. If you have that skill set, you put it all together and you shake it all about, uh, nevermind....

Just remember, you may have to deal with things like this:

I thought of asking Ryan about that last night! :biglaugh: Seriously! I was thinking if I get hired at Wells, I'd send Ryan a plant for his cubicle!! :)

The job fair went OK. Harley Davidson wants to talk to me more, but I think it's more IT related interest. Wells Fargo was a bust, because they didn't really send any HR people, or management to this. It seemed like they were tellers just handing out the cards and info. I REALLY wanted to talk to them. They couldn't answer any of my questions.

The job fair was put on by the newspaper, and I actually got STRONG interest from them. They wanted to talk to me Monday. They didn't know what they needed as skills from IT, but the business area expressed strong interest and hinted they wanted to talk salary monday. It's more sales oriented, which I usually shy away from, but it's specifically working with the business community, which I have been good at and enjoyed before.

With my video background, a couple casinos expressed interest. However, they said NOONE leaves those jobs. So it's hard to get into it. One casino said they wanted me to talk to their IT department, and said they will cross promote me into video if they see I have a knack for it. All the casinos said the video surveillance jobs are hired from within. So you have to work there to get into the video security end of it. Very segregated from the rest of the casino also. Their own entrances, cafeterias, break rooms, etc. Kinda sounds FBI-ish.

Seeds, it sounds as if you work for a progressive company. When I went to get a mortgage refi about a year ago, I scanned all my documents into my computer in different formats, the applications, etc. I was amazed that HUGE lenders, couldn't take my info via email. Everything had to be fax. Which was no problem, but I asked why, and they said they didn't know how to open JPGs, BMPs, etc. This was not just one lender, but several. People like Ameriquest, Quicken, etc. Heck, one company, I practically put the loan together and did the analysis for their loan packager over the phone.

I was very disappointed. Heck, I used to do SBA loans, and I did the intial consultation, gathered the financials, analyzed them, packaged the loans, worked with the SBA to get them approved. Now it seems a lot of these guys just do one phase of the process and have no idea what the other guy in the chain does. Why that's frustrating is you tell your loan officer things, and he forgets to tell the analyst or packager, and it's a constant merry go round of trying to get the correct information to the right people at the right time.

There's more tools to use today, but I don't know if the lending industry has gotten more efficient, or just you can go through that merry go round faster today than in the past.

Hmmm. I so no difference between a fax and a scan, but whatever. Some rules at different companies are so nitpicky. I understand how that could be frustrating. We try to do as much as we can on the computer. I send off digitally signed LSR's to agents' emails....

I sure wish I would have worked with you. :) They said they couldn't figure out how to print out the email stuff, that they are used to faxes. They also said the faxes printed better than the scanned documents! Whatever! They must have had one hell of a fax machine. ;)
