American Idol Returns on Tuesday, Jan. 18
Source: Fox
November 17, 2004

Fox's American Idol has set the stage to return in January. Last season, approximately 65 million votes were cast in the finale, naming Fantasia the third American Idol, joining previous winners Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard.

American Idol is back for its fourth season and another quest to discover America's most talented singer. An all-new season with new contestants and the best and worst of auditions from around the nation begins with a special two-hour season premiere episode Tuesday, Jan. 18 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and a special one-hour episode Wednesday, Jan. 19 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).

This past summer, American Idol traveled to seven cities across the country, looking for the next singing superstar. Episodes featuring the audition cities of Cleveland, St. Louis, Washington, DC, New Orleans, Orlando, Las Vegas and San Francisco will air on three consecutive Tuesdays, Jan. 18 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), Jan. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) and Feb. 1 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), and three Wednesdays, Jan. 19 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), Jan. 26 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and Feb. 2 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). Those who survived the American Idol judges in the audition cities will be highlighted in the semifinal round, which will air on Tuesdays, Feb. 8 and 15 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) and Wednesdays, Feb. 9 and 16 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). Then, tune in to the first performance show of the new season on Tuesday, Feb. 22 (8:30-10:00 PM ET/PT).

Mary Roach...she's my Idol. roflmao! What kind of friends would tell her she's good & put her through that??????????

Female William Hung.

Some of them who said "Can I try a different song?" I wanted to puke. And the judges trying their best not to laugh was killing me. Randy with a paper over his face would be rather distracting IMO. lmao!!! Good times...we'll have to see where this leads...

...to be continued.

I worked at an event about eight months ago and William Hung was one of the performers.
He was so bad he was hilarious and sad, unfortunately I don't think he knows he is that bad.
He actually travels with a handler and a body guard, what a gig.

It was such a freak show. I can't even begin to describe how silly it was.

Ugh...she just looked plain psycho! At least William Hung acknowledged he isn't that good - but gave it his best...she is in pretty bad denial!

I still can't believe there are folks that think they can sing and act all shocked when they get zapped!

But the night's crowning moment came during a 16-year-old contestant's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Stifling laughter throughout the song, the three judges were clearly aghast. After Simon said her performance "was, honestly, excruciatingly awful," it appeared to be yet another 1-2-3 dismissal, with Simon being brutal, Paula complimenting something totally irrelevant ("Your toenails look so nice, sweetheart!"), and Randy flipping a coin to see if he was feeling it or not.
But then Paula offered some unusual career advice. "Have you heard of voiceover work?" Randy started chiming in with ideas: "Cartoons, animation. Doing voices. ‘Rugrats,’ or dogs, or whatever."

Simon couldn't believe this. "So Jessica … is going to walk out of here and the advice you've given to her is that you can do a voiceover for a rat. Charming. Charming. I mean, great advice."

Sorry, Jessica. Spinning around in her chair, her knee pulled up to her chest, her eyes rolling, Paula said, earnestly, "Do you know how hard it is to get an agent and get commercials for that? It's great."

Visibly upset, and totally ignored by the judges, Jessica turned and walked out of the room, but Paula didn't even flinch. "Do you know how hard it is to get a rat job?"

As Randy said "thank you" to Jessica through his laughter, Simon high-fived a still-spinning Paula and, through hysterical laughter, said, "You actually carried that on!"

"Do you know how hard it is to be a rat? Oh, God," Paula said.

That was pretty funny last night...

that was a pretty funny zing by paula - i was laughing so hard at that. you know they are going to be bad when they talk themselves up a bunch before they go in.

the other "high" light of last nights show was Dirk and that other dude that he just met. Dirk sang that Dave Hasselhoff song - rotfl - that was too much. Randy said that he sang it better than Dave - too funny man.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — A contestant on the Fox television show "American Idol" was in jail in Mobile when his bizarre performance aired Tuesday night.

Leroy Wells, 22, of Grand Bay, was arrested Jan. 5 on charges of assault and firing a weapon. Jail records show he's also awaiting trial on drug charges and has pleaded guilty to marijuana possession in 2004 and disorderly conduct in June 2003.

His "Idol" performance was taped last summer in New Orleans.

Wells bounced on stage while talking about sandblasting paint for a living at a Bayou La Batre shipyard near his home near Mobile.

"Idol" judge Randy Jackson told Wells, "Dog, you ain't right for this, man, but listen, we love you."

A stunned Simon Cowell called the performance "ridiculous."

A contestant on "American Idol" was in jail in Mobile, Alabama when his bizarre audition aired on Tuesday night.

Leroy Wells, 22, who stormed into the New Orleans audition room "crunked" out and repeatedly ranting "Can you dig it?," was arrested January 5 on charges of assault and firing a weapon.

Wells was arrested for reportedly shooting an handgun into an occupied vehicle.

"Mr. Wells allegedly shot the victim in his hip," said Moblie police spokesman Marcus Young.

According to police, Wells has been arrested seven other times on charges that include disorderly conduct and marijuana possession.

He was released on $11,000 bond on Wednesday night. His "Idol" performance was taped last summer.

Wells bounced on stage while talking about sandblasting paint for a living at a shipyard near his home near Mobile.

A stunned Simon Cowell called the performance "ridiculous" and joked he couldn't understand a single word Leroy said.
