A source on RealGM who lives next to Amare says he will need additional surgery and won't return to action this season.

That would not surprise me since Amare's surgeon already has stated that. He said injuries of this sort often require multiple surgeries.

I'll personally slap Amare if he doesn't wear goggles for the rest of his career.

They fog up. They FUBAR your peripheral vision. They weaken your distance viewing and depth perception. And if you do get hit in game and they get knocked off your eyes, it could easily ruin the play since you can't see.

That being said... WAER TEH GOGGLEZ

From what I heard on the interview...multiple jarring traumas (falls to the court, hits to the facial area etc.....) on the court could cause the retina to detach even if your wearing goggles. Even though the goggles could lessen damage if there was a poke to the eye.....sounds like goggles do nothing to protect against the other trauma that led to Amares retina deterioration.

I wasn't talking about protecting him from this injury. What are the chances that someone will get 2 significant eye injuries caused by a poke in the eye within a year's time? Very rare but it has happened. I want to protect against yet another poke in the eye.

I would say you're exactly correct. The trauma/jarring from a 250+ lb man running and jumping for a living is the bigger concern. The strain of lifting weights (i.e. the pressure when you're trying to lift something heavy) is a concern too. The poke in the eye is a valid concern, but his retinal health will be more troublesome because of his job than the likelihood of another poke in the eye. The goggles will help the latter.

I recently had a patient who played college volleyball. She's since graduated and still works out a lot. She presented to my office with flashes/floater for a week or so and she indeed had a retinal detachment. The retinal specialist that performed the surgery wouldn't let her WALK on a treadmill for 3 or 4 months, let alone jog and/or lift weights. Now, she may have had a larger detachment that Amare, but there's a difference between a retinal tear and retinal detachment. Rip a little piece of wallpaper off a wall, that's a tear. You glue the wallpaper back on the wall (use laser to seal down the tear) Peel the whole sheet off the wall, that's a detachment (much bigger job to re-attach that sheet of wallpaper).

I can't imagine he'll play again this year. I wouldn't want my name on the medical record saying it's OK to resume regular activity 8 weeks after retinal surgery. At least when the regular activity is NBA basketball.

He should just get a bionic eye from some super secret government R&D project and come back better than ever. Maybe he can get one that shoots freakin laser beams.

It sounds like Amare is out for the season especially when the TV analyst showed an image of the eye and noted the doctors put a band around what I understood was the back of his eye. Actually it sounded like a problem that might always be a worry because of the game he plays. Also I understand he will be needing follow-up surgery. If I recall correctly Amare has had surgery on both knees and now two instances of eye problems that may or may not be related. If I were a team owner, I would be worried about giving him a max contract since he has already missed at least 1 1/2 seasons in his career at age only 26 and might need micro-fracture surgery again sometime in the future.

Cubster is an infamous wrecker of Suns message boards under many names... recognized that style instantly. One of his trademarks is
O&41 (or however many years the Suns have been titleless). Happily he will be permanently banned before he's able to start threads.

What he's saying is that he believes its obvious that Amare and Steve conspired or led the revolt against Porter. Amare's eye affliction is his just desserts for doing that and Steve was torched by our draftee Rondo. I don't recognize the allusion to Clint Eastwood but its pretty obvious he must have a line in some movie to the effect that what you deserve has nothing to do it - i.e., with what you get.

Could be like Amare's karma running over his dogma. You know for what he and Nash did to Coach Porter. Amare got his first, then Nash ended up in the Barrow Burn Unit (BBU) after Suns drafty Rondo lit his rump-a-rooney afire yesterday afternoon. Sometimes deserves do have everything to do with it, Clint Eastwood notwithstanding, eh?

Love always,

- The Cubster

He's still doing this? Unbelievable. This is the ultimate "get a life" clown.
