Apr. 15—LOS ANGELES — Rochester Lourdes graduate Alyssa Ustby has signed a free-agent contract with the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA.
Ustby, who surprisingly went undrafted Monday night in the annual WNBA Draft, recently completed her fifth season at the University of North Carolina where the 6-foot-1 forward was twice named first-team All-ACC.
Training camp begins for WNBA teams on April 27. Ustby signed her contract today, Tuesday, April 15.
Ustby finished her career as the Tar Heels' all-time leading rebounder with 1,251, which also ranked third all-time in the ACC. She averaged 11 points and nearly three assists per game this past season for a Tar Heels team which reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The strong and athletic Ustby is the only player in North Carolina history to record a triple-double. She accomplished that feat one season ago with 16 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists in a 75-71 win over Syracuse.
She scored at least 20 points nine times in her college career.
The Sparks finished a league-worst 8-32 last year, missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. Their 2024 No. 2 overall pick Cameron Brink missed the majority of the season with a torn ACL and is expected back in June.
LA kicks off its regular season May 15 with expansion team Golden State Valkyries.
