CLEVELAND — The Guardians will open their series against the St. Louis Cardinals without their best player.

Jose Ramirez is not in the lineup for the June 27 game at Progressive Field with a contusion in his forearm. Ramirez was hit by a 95 mph fastball from Toronto's Kevin Gausman and left the June 26 game against the Blue Jays in the fourth inning.

The Guardians are using an abundance of caution with Ramirez. No timetable is set for his return.

"We're going to go day to day," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. "We're hoping that he can be back here tomorrow (June 28), but we have to see how he feels."

Daniel Schneemann will start at third against St. Louis.
