In a rematch of the 2024 World Series, the New York Yankees are in Los Angeles this weekend for a highly anticipated showdown with the Dodgers.

The fireworks started early, as Yankees star Aaron Judge launched a home run in his first at-bat of the game. Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani quickly answered, homering to lead off the bottom of the first inning.

Judge’s blast was his 19th of the season, while Ohtani extended his MLB lead with his 21st—and later added his 22nd home run in the sixth inning. Together, the two stars made MLB history.

According to "OptaSTATS," with Judge and Ohtani having won the 2024 AL and NL MVP awards respectively, Friday night marked the first time in MLB history that both reigning MVPs homered in the first inning of the same game.

Ohtani made history by becoming the first player in MLB’s modern era to score 60 runs before June. Entering Friday's matchup, he was batting .292 with 65 hits, 37 RBIs, and an impressive 1.042 OPS.

Meanwhile, Judge leads the league with a scorching .391 batting average. He’s added 19 home runs, 47 RBIs, and boasts a league-best 1.227 OPS.
