On Saturday, when he takes the mound for the Athletics, J.P. Sears will try his best to make Aaron Judge’s day miserable. But the left-hander has nothing but fond memories of the captain from his early days with the New York Yankees.
He told Randy Miller of NJ.com about how Judge welcomed him to the big leagues.

Back in 2022, just two days after Sears learned he had surprisingly made the Yankees’ Opening Day roster, Aaron Judge reached out with a text that caught him off guard. Judge didn’t just offer congratulations. He made a rookie feel welcome and helped him iron out some of those first-time jitters. He arranged a night out in New York for Sears and his family, who had traveled from South Carolina to be there for his big debut.
“Hey, if you’re not busy, I got a reservation for you and your family at Don Angie’s if you want to go,” Judge texted the Yankees rookie.
That’s a pretty big gesture and it meant a lot to Sears.
Don Angie’s, the wildly popular Italian spot in Manhattan’s West Village, isn’t exactly the kind of place you stroll into without a reservation. But Judge had it covered.
“He just set up everything for me,” Sears said. “I didn’t have to really plan anything and just showed up.”
Sears said that as his family was finishing up, Judge appeared. He introduced himself to the family and then paid for the meal.
While the Yankees’ captain continues to pile up home runs and MVP-level seasons, it’s stories like this that show a glimpse of why his teammates love him. Sears was traded in July of that year to the then-Oakland A’s for Frankie Montas.
Sears may be wearing a different uniform today and trying to get Judge out, but he still has a fond memory of his short time in pinstripes.
