Governor Doug Ducey today released the following statement after the announcement from Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly that a new warship will be given the name “USS Arizona.” No Navy ship has carried that name since the USS Arizona was sunk at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

“Today is a proud day for Arizona,” said Governor Ducey. “It’s been nearly 80 years since the attacks on Pearl Harbor, which resulted in the sinking of the USS Arizona and deaths of 1,177 of her crewmembers. This ship and the name, 'USS Arizona,' hold special meaning for our country, its history and the people of Arizona — and today, that legacy begins a new chapter. The commissioning of a new warship named Arizona honors our past—including those who have given their lives in service to our country—and our future and recognizes Arizona’s important contributions to our nation and its defense. Arizona thanks Acting Secretary Modly for this honor and we look forward to the official commissioning of the new USS Arizona."

The new ship planned to receive the name USS Arizona will be a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, the navy’s latest undersea warfare platform. The nuclear-powered attack ships generally house approximately 130 crewmembers.

Personally I think this is a Crap idea. Some names need to be retired with the boat. This is one of them.

I tend to agree unless the name is used in a major way. Why can't it be the newest Aircraft carrier? Make it a visible symbol of strength. Not a stealthy weapon of mass destruction.

They are replacing the Nimitz class carriers with the Ford class and have already named the Ford (13), John F Kennedy (19), Enterprise (25), and two yet unnamed Carriers. I think the Enterprise could have waited till the end and #'s 3 and 4 could have been the Arizona and Oklahoma.

I’m of dual minds about this one.

Consider the USS Maine; blown up in Havana harbor and touched off the Spanish American war. It’s name was given out 3 years later. Another USS Maine was planned in WWII as an Iowa class battleship; and a USS Maine currently serves as a SSBN.

On the other, the Arizona occupies a special place in American military history; the first casualty (in mass consciousness) of WWII. It’s name will always be associated with Pearl Harbor, much like Challenger or Apollo I with space flight.

That's the role Cuba Gooding, Jr. played in Pearl Harbor.
