The San Francisco 49ers are looking to have a bounceback season in 2025.

They might not have one of their best players in Week 1 to set the tone, though.

Brandon Aiyuk is expected to start the season on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

“Even though the timeline, everything being equal, might point toward, Hey, there’s a chance Week 1 — and there still might be a chance Week 1 — I think the feeling inside the organization has always been don’t take any chances, start him off on PUP when they report to training camp on July 22, and then more than likely, just have that carry over into the regular season,” Maiocco said.

Aiyuk would have to miss at least four games if he starts the regular season on the PUP list.

The star wideout tore his ACL and MCL in his right knee on Oct. 20, so it's not a total shock.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had already said Aiyuk would start training camp on the active/PUP list, which allows for healthy bodies in camp but doesn't have a bearing on regular season availability.

Aiyuk only appeared in seven games last season.

After the trade away of Deebo Samuel, Aiyuk is expected to lead the WR room to help newly paid Brock Purdy. But it might be a little while before Aiyuk is ready to do that.
