The 2025 NFL draft is over and the San Francisco 49ers feel very good about the work they put in. John Lynch was able to land major defensive talent throughout the draft.
While the 49ers had a draft that they feel good about, Shedeur Sanders was the main talking point. After being a projected top-five pick at one point in the pre-draft process, Sanders wasn't selected until the fifth round.
Finally, the Cleveland Browns traded up to land him with the No. 144 overall pick.
With the draft now over, Lynch took some time to speak out about Sanders. It was clear that he truly felt for the young quarterback and what he went through during his slide.
Lynch spoke out with his thoughts on the matter during a post-draft meeting with the press.
"There's a lot of time and we're all doing our work, but then you're sitting up there and this was a story that kind of was prevalent," he said. "I think more than anything, just empathy, that's tough for a young man. But I know that he's a competitor. I know that he's got his opportunity now and I think we tell people all the time, it's not when you go, it's not where you go, it's what you do with that opportunity."

Sanders will now have an opportunity to prove every team that passed on him wrong. He has a lot of work to do with the Browns, but he seems ready to get after it.
As for Lynch, San Francisco's first five picks all went to the defensive side of the ball. The 49ers landed defensive lineman Mykel Williams, defensive lineman Alfred Collins, defensive lineman Nick Martin, cornerback Upton Stout, and defensive lineman C.J. West with those selections.
Following a 2024 season that saw San Francisco go 6-11, it's clear that Lynch and company believe that adding defensive talent is the way to get back on track.
