It’s Friday so that means another round of ‘3 Things I Know, 3 Things I Think I Know’.
It’s simply what the title says – ‘3 Things I Know, 3 Things I Think I Know’. Today we look at 2026/2027 prospects on Mississippi State’s radar in football and basketball along with team news:
I know that Mississippi State is in a good spot with 2026 cornerback and Rivals three-star prospect Shawn Church. Church is scheduled to officially visit Mississippi State next weekend for the Bulldogs’ home opener against Arizona State and has talked well of the Bulldogs since receiving that offer last month. Church is a Virginia native and he holds several other Power 4 offers.
Church officially visited Virginia Tech back in June and told us recently that he doesn’t have any other official visits scheduled for the fall outside of Mississippi State. Church has also noted that he plans to make his college decision sooner than later. So how that official visit goes could be a big factor in the decision timeframe for Church.
I know that Mississippi State remains a top contender for 2026 guard and Rivals four-star prospect Trey Beamer, who could play either guard spot at the next level but is mostly being recruited as a two guard. Beamer is spending his senior season at IMG (Fla.) Academy and is originally from Virginia. Beamer also recently released his Top 5 finalists that included Mississippi State, Maryland, Boston College, Virginia Tech and USF.
Beamer is set to officially visit Mississippi State the last weekend of September and also has official visits planned for Maryland and Boston College. Beamer has noted that Mississippi State is probably recruiting him the hardest of all the schools that have offered him. Church is also planning to sign in the November period and will likely make his college decision after he concludes all of his official visits. At this point, Maryland is considered to be State’s biggest competitor for Beamer.
I know that Mississippi State still isn’t done recruiting offensive linemen in the Class of 2026. The Bulldogs currently have six offensive linemen committed in the class – Dylan Steen,Dalton Toothman, Charles Humphrey, Jayden Ross,Camron Thompson and juco transfer Jarmaine Mitchell. While things can always change, it doesn’t appear to be any more specific targets for State at the juco level like we saw with Mitchell.
Mississippi State continues to recruit a couple of offensive linemen that are committed elsewhere and that includes Nebraska commit Leon Noil and SMU commit Evan Goodwin. Both guys officially visited Mississippi State in June and it will be interesting to see if either one, or both, end up taking game-day visits this fall at Davis Wade Stadium.

I think I know that Mississippi State senior guard Ja’Borri McGhee will be the biggest surprise of the Bulldogs’ most recent transfer class. Each time I have talked with sources this offseason about practice, McGhee’s name is always brought up and they always mention his tenacity and competitive nature on the court. The former UAB transfer is working at both guard spots so far and could end up getting over 20 minutes a game this year.
McGhee was Mississippi State’s first commitment in the recent transfer class and sometimes, we overlook those early commitments after the program adds more transfers. While the season will tell the tale, McGhee appears to be a good fit for the SEC and a good fit for the style of play at Mississippi State. He is going to be solid on the defensive end and has the ability to score at all three levels.
I think I know that Mississippi State continues to do well in the early going with 2027 running back and Rivals four-star prospect Ty Keys. The Poplarville High School standout is expected to be in Starkville several times this season, including for the Bulldogs’ home opener next weekend. Keys has already compiled an impressive list of Power 4 offers and that list will keep growing this fall.
Keys has quickly developed good relationships with head coach Jeff Lebby and running backs coach Anthony Tucker, and has talked positively about his recent trips to Starkville. The Magnolia State has several high-level running backs in that 2027 class and Keys is among the best. Of course, there will be plenty of competition for State with Keys and he is also looking hard at Miami, Ole Miss and LSU.
And lastly today, I think I know that recent 2026 Mississippi State commitment Jarmaine Mitchell will remain solid with the Bulldogs. Yes, that sounds kind of weird with a guy that just joined Mississippi State’s class a few weeks ago. But the juco transfer from Copiah-Lincoln Community College is one of the nation’s best juco offensive tackles and will his share of attention this fall.
It wasn’t a surprise to see Mitchell commit to Mississippi State although the timing was a bit of a surprise. Offensive line coach Phil Loadholt has targeted Mitchell since he joined Mississippi State’s coaching staff and that was a factor for Mitchell’s decision. Being a Louisiana native and owning an LSU offer, that is a something that always bears watching. But so far, LSU has not made a major push for Mitchell.
