The New York Giants traded back into the first round of the 2025 NFL draft to select Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart with the 25th overall pick.
It appeared that the entire front office was on board with the move but as time has gone on there has been specualtion that the coaches lobbied for Dart, who may not have been general manager Joe Schoen's first choice.
“It was an organizational decision,” Schoen told Kay Adams of Up & Adams on Thursday. “Any player that we take, it’s a collaborative process and it’s very detailed, and we believe in it.”
Schoen is a polished professional and won't admit what goes on behind the scenes at 1925 Giants Drvie these days, especially after getting burned on HBO's Hard Knocks last year.
Many believe that Schoen wanted Colorado's Shedeur Sanders but caved to his coaching staff, who were advocating for Dart. Schoen admitted to Adams that was pretty much the case.
"Three coaches on staff (head coach Brian Daboll, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, and quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney) that have been part of the development of two pretty good quarterbacks in the league right now (Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen), and when they are convicted on a player and the scouting staff is convicted on a player, typically you have the best chance for success in those situations," he said.
Sanders tumbled down the draft order all the way to the fifth round. Dart would have been scooped up shortly after had the Giants not made their move. It turns out Schoen, by listening to his staff, may have made the right decision here.
Daboll is pleased as punch with Dart thus far. The Giants are excited about what he can bring to them in the future.
Affer all the stories and controversies that have been exposed regarding Sanders' predraft experience, the Giants may have dodged a bullet, one they could ill afford to take.
