McFarland (shoulder) is scheduled to pitch in an extended spring training game Wednesday, Richard Morin of the Arizona Republic reports.
This will be McFarland's first game action after a few successful bullpen sessions. He'll throw one inning and about 15-20 pitches.

Strange. Second worst bullpen ERA in the league and we option a guy performing well in that role. I guess they want him to be a starter eventually and it's hard to do that out of the pen.

I support that. You wouldn't bring up a catcher to play shortstop. Or vice versa.
Why promote a young pitcher, who is used to a starter's routine, and introduce him to the next level in a brand new job -- reliever? That is a double adjustment.
Use him one or two times in relief to take the initial pressure off but, if you are going to bring him up, let it be for the role that he is accustomed to. The one that earned him the promotion.
Especially on a team with a mediocre starting rotation.

My guess would be that Duplantier is here for length until T.J. McFarland is ready to come off the injured list, which seems likely to happen in the next week.

What is #Dbacks rookie pitcher Jon Duplantier’s reward for pitching 4 shutout innings in stellar relief and giving up just one hit? A trip back to Reno. There will be a point where he’ll be up to the big leagues and won’t ever be going back.
