Technically the extension is for 5 years, but it is tacked on to his remaining two years that only pay him $12 million over the two years.

The Houston Astros and 2017 American League Most Valuable Player Jose Altuve have recently agreed to a five-year, $151 million contract extension. The extension begins in 2020 since Altuve is finishing up a four-year, $12.5 million contract that had two club options for the 2018 ($6 million) and 2019 ($6.5 million) seasons. According to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, there is a $21 million signing bonus included in the contract which gives the extension an average annual value of $30.2 million (2020-2024). In total, the Astros are committed to Altuve for the next seven years at $163.5 million with a full no-trade clause. By the end of the extension, Altuve will only be 34 years old.
