My problem with the Pace pick is not Pace himself. It's Graves' lack of readiness.Once Mcdougal was gone, who they said was their #1 choice at 18,they should have done the deal with Baltimore to get a second #1 pick next year.New England got B'more's #1 pick next year with the next pick.I'm sure the Cards could've gotten, maybe they actually did,the same offer.Wouldn't you rather have 2 number 1's next instead of Calvin Pace this year? The Cards aren't going to win this year anyway. Why not stockpile some potential high draft picks for next year where you can maneuver to get the players you really want? There is the risk that the Rvaens do well this year and the pick next year will be toward the bottom of the round but they also may suck and we could have 2 top 10 picks.I think that was a gamble that would be worth taking. At worst, you get a player next who most likely would be rated higher than Pace anyway.

A couple of problems here. First, Pace has upgraded our pass rush (although not to everyone's liking) assuming he assimilates quickly into the defense. Had they not taken him, the roar here would have been deafening about how the pass rush wasn't addressed and it may have resulted in more scorn nationally. In the end, it wasn't a horrible pick.

Second, I get the feeling Graves wouldn't have traded for a pick next year because he has no idea who will be available next year. Even though I think front offices should be cognizant of what the draft class next year is going to look like generally speaking, I doubt they look into very much if at all. Graves seems to be an in front of his face visionary with regards to the draft and next year picks I think are too much for him to handle.

It could be a nightmare having 2 top 10 picks (plus that means you believe the Cards will be so bad they will get a top 10 of their own doing and I am not sure that is accurate right now). We simply don't know, although I am sure some are certain doom is lurking around the corner for this team. The question is, do you want Graves sitting there with 2 top 10 picks after what transpired this year?

Not necessarily. What if Pace comes out and gets 8 sacks and plays very well? And the Ravens pick won't be high. They will win at least 9 games imo.

Yes I think the year we got Eric Hill we drafted an OL in the same round, name escapes me from Boston College?

Joe Wolf.

The year we draft Hearst, we also drafted Ernest Dye, OT University of South Carolina in the first round.

We also had a 2 first the year we drafted Boston....Shelton was the other pick.

That's the name thanks. I actually thought that but Joe Wolf is a basketball player from North Carolina so I decided I was just confused (-:

Forgot about the more recent ones.

I completely agree about trading for unknown picks next year, if you're dealing with a team you expect to be horrible that's one thing, but right now there are about 4-5 kids projected to be in the draft and projected to be "can't miss" kids. Now by draft time more will be there and things will change immensely, but if you don't think you have a pretty good shot at getting a top 5 pick and you like Pace, there's not much point dealing him for next years pick.
