Wow! That's a lot of players and a lot of money taken from former players who actually need it.

Eighteen former NBA players, including Sebastian Telfair, Glen "Big Baby" Davis and Darius Miles, have been charged with defrauding the NBA's health and welfare benefit plan out of approximately $4 million, federal prosecutors said Thursday.

The players were charged with conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud as part of what prosecutors called a "widespread scheme to defraud" the NBA health care benefit plan.

They allegedly submitted false or fraudulent claims totaling nearly $4 million, from which the ex-players took in about $2.5 million

Glen Davis made over $30 million in his career. So sad he had to resort to this along with the others. Most of these guys made a good amount of money.

Off hand not sure what the connection is beyond they were all NBA players. Not all from the same area, team etc wonder how Williams decided which guys to involve?

"The indictment also alleges that Williams impersonated an individual who processed the plan's claims. Williams, the indictment said, received $230,000 in kickbacks from the other defendants for his role."

So, this will be the most interesting part on what type of sentencing Williams gets for being the leader in this!??

The details on this case are wildly stupid.

For example, Smith, who played for the Houston Rockets, submitted claims for IV sedation, a root canal and crowns that he is alleged to have received during a Dec. 20, 2018, dental procedure in Beverly Hills, California, prosecutors said.

"Travel records, e-mail and publicly available box scores showed that he was playing professional basketball in Taiwan that week and did not receive root canals in Beverly Hills as represented in the claim form he submitted," Strauss said.

For example, Davis, Allen and Wroten filed for root canals, all supposedly performed on the same six teeth on April 30, 2016, Strauss said. The trio also put in for payments for crowns done on the same six teeth on May 11, 2016, she said.

Wroten and Allen filed for root canals done on the same 13 teeth on Sept. 6, 2018, Strauss said.

One of the lessons here is probably that if you're stupid enough to blow through a gigantic fortune before the age of 40 then you're probably not smart enough to pull off millions of dollars in fraud.

I am also assuming some unscrupulous but high profile Beverly Hills dentist is looking at some time in the clink.

But he couldn't have been very good at his job... 3 root canals on the same teeth over just a couple years!? Get it together man!

From what I read one of the things that got them caught was they were submitting claims that didn't even have letter head. So there is a decent chance they weren't actually involving the medical professionals and were just using their information on the fake claims.

DAMN!

There goes my idea for "Doc Hollywood II, The Tooth Hurts". It's really too bad, @cheesebeef was going to be asked to be the lead writer.
