It's very strange that you think that a GM constructs the "team of coaches." Generally, coaches are responsible for their own staffs -- it's usually part of the recruiting/interview process to discuss the staff that you would and can bring with you to create your team.

You could easily argue that the WORST part of Keim's job is his ability to build coaching staffs.

I'd say that drafting is the MOST important part (especially post the last CBA that capped rookie deals) because it creates so much flexibility along the rest of your roster.

Here we are in mid-April and we need at least 4-6 starting players because we failed to draft or retain home-grown talent; we'll definitionally have to pay more for veterans at those positions, and have them on shorter-term contracts.

That means will have to play the lottery again next year and hope that we don't roll snake eyes on another position that we need to sign a veteran at because we couldn't retain someone.

I'd argue that Keim's record is better because Bruce Arians excels at getting the most out of a roster from the W-L perspective, and it had little to do with the rosters that Keim placed in front of Arians. The evidence for this is how Arians managed to go 7-9 with a Bucs roster with Jameis Winston passing 30 and 30 TDs and INTs plus the 29th-ranked scoring defense in the NFL. Add a respectable QB to that roster and Arians is lifting the Lombardi trophy.

With another head coach, those last two Arians seasons probably look more like the last two Whisenhunt seasons and the one Wilks season, and you have extremely similar records for both GMs.

I feel like this take aligns exactly with the logic I posted above.

Keim has had 3 HCs. Two of them he hired all the coaches.

Let's say the Cards did hire Wilks as a 'bridge' coach (but then why give him a contract over a year and all that money which is still a lot of money), is that illegal if they paid him his money for a job which he never had to complete. Again, this is about it being racial which I find hard to believe considering this franchise's history hiring minorities

What was his record as a GM? Who was the number one target on this board as public enemy number 1 that needed to be fired almost every single year? Had a nickname as the snail? And yet was black and maintained his position as GM for a decade.

Anyone even hinting that had Keim been black he would be fired by now? Clearly truly believes the Cardinals organization is racist at its core. They are part of the problem not the Cards. An organization that has clearly shown they are one of the better if not the best organization at giving minorities opportunities at pretty much every level.

It’s literal Horse manure at the highest level.
I don't know what the data says, but overall the verdict that Keim would've been fired already if he was black is total dog schisse.

It's an insult to real racism.

Keim did his best work when he just had to tweak the roster that Graves had already built. Once those core players left and it was up to Keim to build an entirely new roster, his results have been questionable at best.

You don’t know that. No one here does. Also, even if true that’s not the norm across the NFL.

Kingsbury, a first-time NFL coach who was hired to replace Steve Wilks on Tuesday, didn't announce any members of his first staff but said he's working "closely" with and "leaning heavily" on general manager Steve Keim to identify potential candidates.

The most important job of a GM is to construct a roster and team of coaches that can win games. Preferably consistently over a number of years.

Drafting is an important part of that but its only part.

Keim has a far better winning record than Graves despite Graves having better drafts. What use are good drafts with wins?
Well when everything finally clicked . . . playoff wins. Which GM had more playoff wins? Also, which had a better owner situation? And mind you, I’m not touting graves over keim - I think they both have huge warts.

At least neither of them were Bob, who got lucky with Plummer playing out his rear end in 98. It was so wierd that we technically didn't have a GM after Buddy was fired until Bob's title was changed in 99.

GMs
Arch Wolfe - 26-88-5 (back to back 0-10 seasons)
Ray Bennigsen - 34-24-1
Walter Wolfner - 38-80-4
Bill Bidwill - 380-493-15
Larry Wilson - 82-132-2
Buddy Ryan - 12-20
Bob Ferguson - 41-71
Rod Graves - 64-95
Steve Keim - 76-67-2

Keim deserves to be in the ring of honor after seeing these numbers.

Bob Ferguson - 41-71
i thought Ferguson was underrated and was really hamstrung financially by Bidwill Sr

also: Bill Bidwill Jr negotiated an over the top contract extension for Jake Plummer two years prior needing to........

and Ferguson had no idea it was happening until it was done.

When the Cardinals were in St. Louis there used to be a guy named Joe Sullivan running things. He didn't have the title of general manager, but rather, was called the Director of Operations. He was atrocious.

They also had a guy named George Boone running the draft. He never met with the draft picks in person before drafting them. He said he didn't care to meet with any potential draft pick personally because he knew they'd all just tell him how great they were. He was a moron, for sure.

Lawyer representing Steve Wilks: “There is a legitimate race problem in the NFL”

When Panthers owner David Tepper made Steve Wilks the interim head coach on October 10, Tepper was asked whether Wilks had a shot to keep the job beyond 2022.

“If he does an incredible job, he has to be in consideration,” Tepper said.

Wilks arguably did an incredible job. He forced the team into playoff contention. He won the loyalty, admiration, and respect of his players. Players spoke up in his favor.

Now, the team that fired its head coach during the season has hired a coach who was fired by another team during the season, instead of Wilks. And Doug Wigdor, who represents Wilks in the pending Brian Flores racial discrimination case against the league and several teams, has made it clear that Wigdor and Wilks have a problem with the move.

“We are shocked and disturbed that after the incredible job Coach Wilks did as the interim coach, including bringing the team back into playoff contention and garnering the support of the players and fans, that he was passed over for the head coach position by David Tepper,” Wigdor said in a statement that was both circulated by email and tweeted. “There is a legitimate race problem in the NFL, and we can assure you that we will have more to say in the coming days.”

Meh. The Panthers owner can hire whoever he wants to hire and it doesn't make it racism just because he went in a different direction. He said Wilks would have to do an incredible job to become the coach moving forward. Wilks was 6-6. Is .500 incredible?

Hard to argue with their pick because of his importance to the franchise - Reich was their first-ever quarterback.

Yes, Wilks did a pretty great job going 6-6 after a 1-4 start and a QB group that was close to as bad as his year in AZ.

I think there is a legitimate race problem in the NFL. That said, Wilks deserved to be fired. The Cards’ actions reflect more of general incompetence than discrimination. I think they’ve tried to provide opportunities, they just lack the skill to make good decisions, even when they try to spend a little more. The Kingsbury hire was more like a dog seeing a squirrel. They saw strong offensive coaches and wanted one too. They weren’t discriminating. They were just inept. Stupidity is the best defense.

Cmon, Mitch. I’ve never understood why people say things they have zero evidence of whatsoever, let alone something like this that is blatantly factitious, but do do in a manner that suggests that their comment has merit.

This may be the best description yet of the Kingsbury hire. Absolutely hilarious!

Rivera reveals that Wilks was unable to put together a staff of coaches he wanted and wanted to work with him.

“The hard part for him there, he was the last guy hired,” Rivera said for Sports Illustrated. “So all the guys that were on his coaching list, they were already locked in. He had to hire guys that he really didn’t want to have to hire. He had to keep guys he didn’t want to keep.”

Offensive coordinator Mike McCoy was believed to have been selected by general manager Steve Keim. Other holdovers were Byron Leftwich, Larry Foote, Steve Heiden and others.

Vance Joseph and thus the whole defensive staff were also not Kliff's choice. And again he had to guys like keep Heiden and Cam Turner.

"Arizona general manager Steve Keim said Wednesday the Cardinals were searching for a “veteran” defensive coordinator who would run a 3-4 defense"

And it's obvious that Tom Clements was not Kliff's idea as it looks like he was sidelined and never replaced.

Plus we heard recently that Kliff wanted to fire Kugler some time ago but wasn't allowed. If your HC is "allowed" he's not in control.

Wilks and Kliff both were put in garbage situations by Keim. Wilks was never given the chance to coach his way out of it, but Kliff was and they still wouldn't make roster or coach decisions.

Agreed. It seems like Wilks would have figured it out based on the results this year as interim.

Hey, they took the job and agreed to the "garbage situation". Don't think Keim put a gun to their head or anything like that. They got paid pretty good money and flamed out.
