NFL says all teams must add minority offensive coach, expands Rooney Rule to include women

All 32 NFL teams will hire a minority offensive assistant coach for the 2022 season, part of a series of policy enhancements announced Monday to address the league's ongoing diversity efforts.

The coach can be "a female or a member of an ethnic or racial minority," according to the policy adopted by NFL owners during their annual meeting, and will be paid from a league-wide fund. The coach must work closely with the head coach and the offensive staff, with the goal of increasing minority participation in the pool of offensive coaches that eventually produces the most sought-after candidates for head-coaching positions.

"It's a recognition that at the moment, when you look at stepping stones for a head coach, they are the coordinator positions," said Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II, the chairman of the NFL Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee. "We clearly have a trend where coaches are coming from the offensive side of the ball in recent years, and we clearly do not have as many minorities in the offensive coordinator [job]."

How about let’s just get the best people for the job whatever their immutable characteristics
Agreed, and to do so, some oversight has to be given to all the rich white old men who in the past would not have even considered the idea that someone that looks different than them could possibly be that person. You start by removing barriers of entry. The dream that we are all hired and fired based on our talent level only comes after leveling the playing field a bit.

Well, they are trying but not sure if this will make any difference on the actual hiring of head coaches. The owners make the major decisions on that. Additionally, these threads could go on and on and not really solve anything. Too political.

You hit the point very nicely, imo. Unfortunately, this has to be legislated because we, as a society, have not allowed this to happen on it's own.

I recently read this... the "all men are created equal" as originally written doesn't mean what I thought it did.

On July 4, 1776, when the Continental Congress adopted the historic text drafted by Thomas Jefferson, they did not intend it to mean individual equality. Rather, what they declared was that American colonists, as a people, had the same rights to self-government as other nations. Because they possessed this fundamental right, Rakove said, they could establish new governments within each of the states and collectively assume their “separate and equal station” with other nations. It was only in the decades after the American Revolutionary War that the phrase acquired its compelling reputation as a statement of individual equality.

It's stupid. Must be a minority offensive coach? So a minority defensive coach is no good? What about a minority assistant gm? Or some other front office job?

If the nfl wants more opportunities for minority candidates fine...stop pigeon holing people into what roles they have to have.

Did you realize that over 80% of current minorities are already on the defensive side of the ball? They had to create this rule because they obviously weren't getting as many opportunities on that side of the ball.

Oh, and everyone watch themselves...

I think that’s the issue. I don’t know the stats but I’m guessing this was born from the fact that head coaches today come mostly from the offensive side of the ball and maybe there’s an unexplainable imbalance there.

If the owners really wanted to effect changes quickly they'd up the ante on hiring black GM's, head coaches and coordinators. Award teams an extra first round draft choice for hiring a black GM or head coach, and an extra 2nd round draft choice for hiring a coordinator. Hell, make it an extra first and second round draft choice and you'd really get things moving. Do this for the next 3 years and I think you'd see results.
