Figure out the two-minute drill.
I don’t honestly know enough about how it works to say that Kyler’s painful orchestration of the two-minute offense is a direct result of his lax attitude toward film study, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
Kliff has attacked big projects every offseason during his tenure here; I won’t be surprised if this one is solving the quick game for and with Kyler.
I think a lot of problems stem from Kyler not being a film grinder. I don't believe he has a great idea of how teams are trying to attack him and therefore struggles to figure out how to counter because he hasn't spent much time on it.
I don't think Kyler understands the importance of diagnosing pre-snap and then confirming post-snap. I think that is why he struggles with timing and rhythm passing. He is almost shocked when things aren't the same.
I also think the clock issues are because he is trying so hard to figure out the defense pre-snap. He just doesn't have the ability to keep track of both consistently. It is the same with the protection calls. There is a reason he doesn't set it.
I also don't know if Kyler understands the nuance of the two minute which would make sense as he is not a nuanced QB. He is so concerned with completing passes that he doesn't factor in the time those completion take or if he should complete them. He doesn't seem to be aware of what calls exploit the 2 min coverages. I also think it highlights that Kyler is helped out by Kliff's play calling as much as Kliff is helped out with Kyler's elusiveness. Kyler does seem to rarely audible and doesn't often progress through his reads.
All in all, yes, I think that Kyler not being a film rat has hindered his progression as a complete QB. In his audibles, 2 min offense and progression reads. And it isn't that he isn't going through film, but he has probably had more meaningful 2 min drills this yera than he did in all of college. And in the NFL you don't have all day in the pocket to wait for your WRs to get wide open.
