This was Paul's preferred destination.

I think this was a desperate move, but I think this is a desperate team. If we don’t make big noise this season then we risk losing Booker. I’ve been patient for many years, I think the time is now to take that big swing.

This is what the Suns have left to spend.

oh that sucks. Gallo ain’t coming here for 9 million.

feel like they badly need to make a run at Ibaka with that money.

Pros:
  • CP3 becomes the vocal leader on the floor
  • Improved perimeter defense
  • Will get Ayton involved more in the offense than Rubio did
  • National recognition
Cons:
  • Albatross contract
  • Age
  • Oubre gone
  • 2022 pick gone (might be first season age restrictions are lifted)

Grade: B-

Smart play for Phoenix now is to focus on their own free agents: Saric and Baynes. Letting both go only leaves them with $9.3M room ML and $3.6M biannual exception. Can bring both back and still have the 2 exceptions to use.

Best case scenario, per Bobby Marks.

Throwing in Jerome and Lecque... what does the deal do to our salary cap space moving forward this year?

Nothing. we are taking back abdel Nader who has a 1.8 mill contract, and shipping out Leque 1.5 mill and Jerome 2.3 mill

I’m not thrilled with the pick given up, but We’re gonna lose Booker to the Lakers in three years anyway so I’m down with taking the risk here. If Paul can stay healthy, we should finally make the playoffs for the first time in forever.

If that happens, I'll officially be done with the NBA.

Um - this deal better not be going through officially before we sign our FA PF.

Here’s the way I’m looking at this for the Suns.

It makes us better right now. It’s going to be short season this year you load manage him and watch his minutes.

after this year he’s only on the hook for 1 year. If it’s working then great if it’s not then he becomes a huge trade chip a big expiring contract we can use.
I agree with this. We didn’t lose additional talent. I think Paul immediately makes us formidable. I hate including the draft pick. Particularly as that’s a rich draft with high schoolers. The 1-12 protection is more like 1-7 protection because of the increased talent likely. I would’ve been okay if it was 1-18 protected. I know it seems like I’m quibbling but a good gm gets it done without there being a portion of the deal requiring him to bend over.

Biggest douche in the league. Now we have to hear about this guy all season long locally. Ugh.

The Suns put most of their money in a point guard when they already had that position filled.

I'm not sure who is willing to take that amount of money. Saric?

It's probably Saric.

Silly. Lecque has like a 5% chance of being an NBA player, he's nobody. We may be less athletic, but we're sure as hell a better team now, and plenty athletic enough.

I had high hopes for Leque, but he was a bad player in the G-league. That is not something that usually equates to NBA stardom. Heck Bender was crushing it in the G-League when he was there.

Are the salaries close enough to do this after free agency?

If we do this deal before signing a FA we only have like 8 or 9 mill in cap room, whereas if we wait till after FA we have 17-18 million to sign somebody - which would be Gallinari.

Reportedly Devin Booker was in favor of the trade. That may be the primary reason for the trade.

Even with the additional compensation to OKC? If so, then I think they had no choice but to do it.
