The Diamondbacks need a legitimate ace, for the same reason that we
obtained Greinke.
It is needed to put us in the category of a contender. As Yogi Berra said,
"Baseball is 90 per cent mental. The other half is physical."
To paraphrase what 1Sun posted, the only way to keep developing Robbie
Ray as a solid #2 or #3 starter is to have a solid #1.
Mad Bum is certainly not what he once was but, at the top of the rotation,
he is a major step up from what we are. At less cost than Greinke.
I didn't think we had a chance of landing Mad Bum, but I am thrilled that he
will be heading our staff.
Now we need a solid setup and closer. With that, it will so much easier to
develop a dependable rotation of pitchers.

We also need either two outfielders or an outfielder and a second baseman.

Like Randy, Mad Bum throws lefty but bats righty. But he has power.
I never understood why any lefty pitcher would want to switch
over and have his pitching arm facing the pitcher's mound.
I'm a lefty and, when I was a kid, they forced me to bat righty
and I had no eye/hand coordination at the plate.
One day when I was about 14, I saw a kid hitting lefty and
thought, "Why am I not doing that?"
So I walked to the plate and, in my very first swing, batting
lefty, lined a double to right-center to drive in the tying run
then score the winning run.
To this day, all these decades later, I have never forgotten
the feeling of the bat solidly hitting the ball. No orgasm has
ever felt quite as good.

The word “ace” in MLB is like “superstar” in the NBA. It gets used way too much.

applies to players who put up outstanding individual stats, whether they lead their team
to victories or not.
An MLB ace excels in two roles, primarily, every 5th game. Hopefully, to get the team off
to a good start in an important series, such as playoffs and to stop losing streaks when it
is his turn to start. Some teams have an undependable ace, but he is still his team's ace.

My definition of a true ace is a CY candidate. Madbum hasn’t been in the conversation for 3-4 years (finished 4th in 2016). That said we’re not paying him like an ace so we shouldn’t expect one. Just eat innings and give us 2-3 3+ WAR seasons and rake like usual. If he’s a positive clubhouse leader that provides more value.
