This is another game the D-backs are supposed (expected?) to win.

'Hope so!

Scoring so far . . .

Miami with an RBI double in the top of the 3rd.
Walker with an RBI double in the bottom of the 3rd.
Miami took a 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the top of the 5th.
My boy Cron with a PH solo HR in the bottom of the 5th and
Escobar doubled in Rojas to give the D-backs a 3-2 lead.
Flores singled in Escobar to make it 4-2.
Cron had hit for the pitcher Young, so we'll have a new pitcher,
Andreise.

Notable . . .

Walker made an error that I think was involved in Miami scoring.
Marte left the game after hurting himself while sliding.

Misc. . . .

I had to leave watching the game to see Jeopardy. One of my
son's good friends is the defending Champ, with the 6th and
7th highest totals in games won and money earned so far,
which is $361,943. As Alex said to him, "I guess that's more
than what you earn as a high school math teacher." :)

I've been talking with Jason on Facebook mail but, of course,
the shows are taped in advance and he signed a non-disclosure
agreement. So my son and I are in the dark until each show airs.

Go, Jason!

The Marlins have loaded the bases against Andreise with 2 outs
in the top of the 6th. Two walks and an infield hit.

And the Marlins with a 3-run double to clear the bases.

From 4-2 D-backs to 5-4 Miami. The D-backs bullpen strikes again. :(

All five Marlins runs have come with two outs. I hope the D-backs
hitters are taking notes.

Sherfy is pitching the 7th for the D-backs. Rojas almost misplayed
a Marlins leadoff double to left field. Followed by a single.

1st & 3rd. Then a double. Another run. Runners on 2nd & 3rd and
no outs yet. And a bloop drives in another. Then a double makes it
8-4 Marlins. And runners on 2nd & 3rd with no outs . . . again.

I really expected better from Sherfy. Five batters, five hits, including
three doubles.

Pitching change. Clarke is now in to pitch.

Clarke comes in with no outs and runners on 2nd & 3rd.
He gets two outs, then gives up a 2-run single and it's
10-4 going to the bottom of the 7th.

I wonder if there is a Jeopardy rerun airing somewhere
that I can switch to.

There don't seem to be any fellow ASFN posters here.
I refuse to watch the post-game show. It gets frustrating
to hear Torey telling the Press just about every night
that he doesn't have any idea what to do about it. o_O

Walker singles in a run. Runners on 1st & 3rd with
one out. Flores, with a full count, hits a mile high
popup. Jones whiffs. 10-5 Miami.

The scourge of saber metrics. A popup and strikeout.

Ho hum!

A leadoff HR by Miami to start the 8th.

They were tied with the Tigers for the
fewest runs scored in the Major Leagues.

And another extra base hit, a double.

Have the D-backs gone to position
players coming in to pitch? Nope,
it's the bullpen. :)

Something needs to be done this
offseason to shake up this team.

They are in a state of malaise.

Another Marlins run scores and it's 12-5
going to the bottom of the 8th.

3 1/2 hours so far.

Hey, D-backs, hit it into the shift ...
and popup ... and strikeout.

Maybe they won't, just to spite us.

Problem is our bullpen is full of scrubs with 5+ ERA’s. That’s just not going to get it done. If we want to make the playoffs we need to revamp that bullpen.

Hey, broseph, welcome to the twilight zone. :)

And an almost all-rookie starting staff. And a lineup of hitters
most of whom are more concerned with hitting into the shift
than driving in runs.

And a coaching staff who treats each game all season long
as Spring Training.

Pardon my pessimism, but it's been a chore tonight watching
us being manhandled by an inferior team.

Hey, Vargas with a triple to lead off the bottom of the 9th.
Rojas singles him in. Walker with a single. 1st & 3rd.

Almonte flies out, Rojas starts home then
goes back to 3B and gets tagged out.

Fundamentals, man, fundamentals.

And that's it. 12-6 Miami.

Carson Kelly hasn’t done anything for this team in 2 months. Not sold on him as our “catcher of the future.”

Varsho’s rise as a prospect combined with Carson Kelly’s emergence as a borderline All-Star level catcher creates a bit of a good problem moving forward. Both players are controllable for the foreseeable future, so the question becomes getting Varsho ABs without taking from Kelly’s playing time. Part of that solution involves moving Varsho to the outfield, an area where the team is hurting for depth and doesn’t have impact talent arriving until at least the 2021 season. Varsho is an above average runner with good athleticism, so it’s just a matter of him reading the ball out there and figuring out where to go. That is easier said than done, as most MLB outfielders have years of experience to fall back on.

The D-backs have two potential Catchers of the Future in Carson Kelly and Daulton Varsho.

That is if Torey Lovullo isn't around to ruin Varsho as he has Kelly and Avila by stereotyping them as #8 hitters, who don't get decent pitches to hit by batting in front of the pitcher.

Recently Lovullo saw the light and moved them up in the order and batted a speedy hitter eighth. It lasted one game! Then a few games later, he did it again. Again, it lasted one game!

Even when he discovers a good idea, he doesn't give it time to develop. As I've posted before, every day is a new beginning.

Tory Lovullo has some great young talent. But does not have the managerial skill, or patience, to develop them.

I would hope that GM Hazen, who was his Red Sox buddy, sees that and does what is best for the team.

Lovullo is extremely short sighted. There is no "of the future" in the decisions he's made so far.

You might cite Ketel Marte as an exception, but the D-backs were weak at both 2B and CF that Torey had no choice but to give him a chance.

And still he continues to move him all around the batting order and not leave him in the 3rd spot to drive in runs with his power production.

We need a "manager of the future". :)
