Then, I saw Cincy showing the same stubbornness as the D-backs have,
making outs by hitting directly into the shift, despite the other side of
the infield being wide open.
I can't begin to understand what goes through the minds of management
and players in that position. But I can guess that it has something to do
with all of these instant millionaires playing for their next contract.
It seems to be a microcosm of society. Live for today. Don't be concerned
about tomorrow. The problem being that tomorrow will then be the next
today. And on and on. For the past half century.
Part of me wants to stop honoring that mentality among our most visible
people. But professional sports is supposed to be a diversion from all of
that and, for 67 years, since I was 11, I've been hooked.
Such is life!
