Team USA opened FIBA World Cup play with a 88-67 win over the Czech Republic.

Donovan Mitchell led the way with 16 points, but he was far from the only star scorer. Kemba Walker and Harrison Barnes each poured in 14, while Jayson Tatum added 10 of his own.

But as strong as their offense was, defense was what won the day here. They held the Czech Republic to only 67 points on 41 percent shooting, forcing 15 turnovers in the victory. Those turnovers were especially important in dictating the pace and energy of the game. Team USA was unstoppable when it was able to get out and run. Their athleticism is unmatched in this tournament, and it showed in this victory.

If five-on-five basketball is ever replaced in the Olympics it will give me one more reason not to watch.

‘There are rumors, from people who hold high positions in European and world basketball, that the 2028 Olympics will not see (five-on-five) basketball anymore, and will be replaced by three-on-three,″ said Rolandas Skaisgirys of the Lithuanian 3×3 Association on the BasketNews. It podcast.

For the first time, three-on three basketball will be an event in the 2020 Olympics.

Why?! I don't get it. Don't mess with the sport!
I would guess it is aimed at curbing the dominance of Team USA. Other countries have a couple stars but we can run 12 deep with all stars.

I don't mind 3 on 3 being added but I think the US team would be even more dominate in that setting if it's being done to curb the dominance of the US. If stars were allowed to pick their teammates I could see more going. Imagine a team with Steph, Klay, and Draymond, for example.

There has been FIBA three on three for awhile. I don't know if the us is dominant in it, but I'm sure we wouldn't be able to trot out our big three all stars. I don't know maybe we would but three on three looks like a much different game we'd want specialists.

There may be FIBA 3 on 3 now but if it goes to the olympics then you'd think the US would start sending pros. Even if they sent the best team from the Big 3 they should be capable of competing quite well. I don't know if you've seen any of that league this year but Joe Johnson has looked like prime Joe Johnson there, perhaps even better. Some of the stars of old could see a second life on a 3 on 3 team like most of the players in the Big 3 league. It'll be interesting to see how the US responds to it if it is added because there are a few ways they could go.

I don't mind three-on-three basketball being added to the Olympics (they have about everything else) as long as they keep the five-on-five games. Personally I do not enjoy watching the three-on three stuff. It reminds me a lot of half-court basketball which is fun to play when a team is short on players.

However, I suspect the top U.S. players will not be participating in the three-on-three games either so I think the game and talent gets further diluted.

Bill Simmons still hatin on Devin Booker. Smdh

It's obvious Team USA doesn't have the significant talent advantage it once had in international competition. Devin Booker has better reasons (injury concerns) than many of the top players missing the competition.

Maybe Simmons is still smarting from that 70 points Booker put up against the Celtics.

There are 4 Celtics on Team USA, if they're struggling to win then Celtic fans are the last guys to be bashing anyone.
