The Arizona Coyotes have acquired forward Phil Kessel and a 4th round pick from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward Alex Galchenyuk and defenceman Pierre-Olivier Joseph (23rd overall, 2017).

No salary retained.

Rick Tocchet had been known in Pittsburgh as the “Phil Kessel Whisperer.” They’re reunited now after #Pens star OK’d trade to #Coyotes. I wrote a little about Tocchet/Kessel two years ago as ⁦‪@RealRocket22‬⁩ was up for head coaching jobs:

Kessel didn’t have to waive for the trade to Arizona. The Coyotes were on his Yes list of teams as part of his modified NTC. But a reunion with Tocchet would have been appealing anyway.

Kessel would have led the Coyotes in goals, assists, points, power-play goals and game-winning goals last season, all by a wide margin.

Upon further review, this seems like a great strategic move by the Yotes... Galchenyuk is entering the final year of his deal, while the team will still control Kessel for the next 3, possibly 4 years.

I love Chayka. In my mind he's the best GM in the valley right now. If the Coyotes ever win the Stanley Cup under him, just imagine the hottest spot temperature wise wins the Stanley Cup? The middle of a desert wins professional hockey's top prize? That's just insane! But I am dreaming.
