Five matchups that could determine the outcome of Sunday’s season-opener at Ford Field:
Marvin Jones, WR, #11 vs Justin Bethel, CB, #28 - The Arizona secondary will likely play “sides” in this game instead of Patrick Peterson following Golden Tate around the field. While Tate is more likely to get inside Bethel’s head, Jones is a lanky, speedy deep threat who could challenge Bethel’s still-developing ball skills.
Ziggy Ansah, DE, #94 vs D.J. Humphries, LT, #74 - Ansah struggled with injures throughout 2016 and only notched 2 QB sacks. He’s been kept in bubble wrap for the Lions’ preseason. Humphries has failed to carry forward what little momentum he built in two starts at LT last season — when he still gave up 5.5 sacks and blew 14 pass blocks, per FootballOutsiders game charting data. Hopes for improvement from Arizona's 21st-ranked offensive DVOA in 2016 hinge on Carson Palmer staying mostly free from pressure.
Greg Robinson, LT, #73 vs Chandler Jones, OLB, #55 - Robinson was a prospect that I liked a bunch coming out of college and who hasn’t developed since. He gave up one more sack and the same amount of blown blocks last season as Humphries. If Chandler Jones can consistently turn the corner on Robinson, this game could get out of hand very quickly.
Nevin Lawson, CB, #24 vs. Jaron Brown, WR, #13 - Lack of game-planning and exposure have hidden whether the other Brown can fill the big shoes of 2015 Michael Floyd (50+ catches, 800+ yards, 5+ TDs) or just the 2016 version. Jaron Brown must be an effective boundary receiver for the Cardinals offense to succeed.
Theo Riddick, RB, #25 vs Haason Reddick, ILB, #43 - Riddick is the third-down back for the Lions. Reddick has been withheld from the A-gap blitzing he was likely drafted to excel at during the preseason. Whether it’s defeating the running back’s block or effectively reading his route out of the backfield, this is a key matchup to watch in Jim Bob Cooter’s short-passing offense.
Prediction: Arizona Cardinals 34, Detroit Lions 20
