Jarvis Jones disappoints at Georgia Pro Day

Posted by Michael David Smith

The reviews are in from Georgia’s Pro Day, and while linebacker Jarvis Jones declared himself the best player in the draft afterward, most other observers weren’t so impressed.

NFL Network’s Mike Mayock reported from the Pro Day that Jones ran a 40-yard dash in the 4.9-second range, and that representatives of multiple teams were alarmed that Jones was that slow.

From Great Blue North Draft Report
There was a full house at the Georgia pro day earlier today where OLB Jarvis Jones was the featured attraction. The early reports on Jones' day, though, haven't been overwhelming. Indeed, Jones was clocked in a very pedestrian time of around 4.9 seconds in the 40, and reportedly didn't look very athletic in otherr drills. However, it appears that several teams with top picks at this year's draft are still interested as Jones reportedly has private workouts scheduled with Kansas City, Philadelphia and Detroit, which have the 1st, 4th and 5th picks respectively at next month's draft.

Means nada IMO. JJ produced on the field, but he does have character issues I believe.

If I remember correctly Suggs ran a slow 40 & so did ILB Brandon Spikes and I think those guys are pretty good players.

Terrell Suggs was in the 260's. Bad day for Jones who was already an undersized pass-rusher.

As long as the Cardinals don't take him, I don't care.

Guy is going to be a HUGE bust in the pros, IMO.

Character issues, like what? He's the polar opposite of a player with character issues

The concern is heath issues:

Jones' short- and long-term durability has been a question mark throughout the draft process because it has long been reported that Jones suffers from a condition called spinal stenosis. Or basically, he has a narrowing between the C4 and C5 vertebrae in his neck.
it's important to remember that NFL teams will trust their own medical staff when it comes to Jones' durability. Teams need to feel comfortable with the long-term diagnosis in order to take him in the top half of the first round, and those discussions at team headquarters will remain behind closed doors.

On tape Jones looks like Adrian Wilson playing OLB. He's physical and tenacious---but smallish in comparison to typical edge rushers.

Not sure how he will fare when getting dwarfed by NFL tackles.

The red flags are difficult to ignore: (a) size; (b) medical risk; (c) not a workout stalwart; (d) a now a 4.9 40?

Dion Jordan at 6-6, 248 and Ziggy Ansah at 6-5, 270 ran 4.60 and 4.63 respectively....and it was the first 40 Ansah had ever run.

I hate the 40 yard dash. It can ruin or make someone's college career and alter their draft stock drastically. This guy did everything right and because he ran a 4.9 instead of a 4.7 he's all of a sudden going to be a bust? Vontaze ran a 5.1 and he really showed everyone they were wrong. Jones will be a stud. We have too many holes to fill to grab him but I wouldn't mind at all.

Exactly his 40 time means nothing. The game tape doesn't lie he a monster. The county in sacks, tackles for loss and forced fumbles, Hes not a one year wonder either.

I'd rather take a guy who has a bad workout but produces great on game day than as guy like dontarie poe who was garbage his whole career and wowed people in his work outs

As far as him being small he's only an inch shorter than von miller and Terrell suggs. He's really not that small

I believe the great Deacon Jones once said he did not know why they made such a big deal out of the 40 yard dash, stating he never had to run 40 yards to take down the QB :)

It is perplexing.

But the one thing I find funny is that players run faster on turf then grass. Seeing how he was outside, I'm going to assume he was running on grass. So he's probably faster than that time.

Also it is true 40 time isn't always the biggest deal. I feel it has varying translation depending on position. He's a pass rusher, so quickness combined with strength and moves are more important. He won't be dropping into coverage often, and if he's really a liability he can be strictly a pass rusher. But that would mean a one dimensional player which would be important to take into account if drafting.

Now it might hurt him against say the Wilson's and Kaepernick's, but he should be plenty quick enough to get to most NFL QB's.

Personally I think the best available player will be on the OL. BPA means if Warmack is available, he's the BPA and at a need position.

I'm wary of drafting someone to only be a pass rushing specialist, and if I was, I would want someone faster. I mean what is he about the same size as Bruce Irvin but ~1/2 second or more slower? Ahh Irvin ran a 4.50. As much talent as he flashed, I still think he was a reach for where he was selected.

Though pass rush is very important, so I can understand these premium type moves. Guys that are one dimensional to me scream lower draft position. Blue chippers are supposed to be jack of all trades, king of all type players. Specialists imo belong in the 2nd round or lower. At the very best bottom 1st round.

Now I don't know a ton about Jarvis Jones, so I can't tell you how he covers or how he handles the run, but if all he does is rush the passer, I say pass and take a true blue chipper. Especially when the QB's in OUR division mean IF he IS slow, then it would show up MOST against Kaepernick and Wilson as they just bust it around his rush for 40 yards.

Love Deacon Jones. He could jump off the snap of the ball.

He could be the guy who plays better on the field than he does in workouts or he could be the guy who played much better in college than he did in the NFL. He's a gamble. I don't think the Cards are in the position to gamble on their first round pick.

Mingo > Jones

The only good thing about JOnes is his flexibility to bend around the corner.

He will end up in the NFL as the next Quentin Groves with his lack of size and speed.

Although I have loved this guy all year since he is a perfect fit for the Horton 3-4. I can't see him in the Parcells version of the 3-4. I don't think that he was ever under consideration for our pick.

Dion Jordan is the best defensive option for us now. Or maybe Milliner.
