New Mayor tells Coyotes: 'Glendale is not your cash register'

http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/story/2...ls-coyotes-glendale-is-not-your-cash-register

Glendale has a new mayor, and one of the first things he says after he's elected is not music to the ears of the Phoenix Coyotes.

Is this another shot at this franchise that just can't seem to get a break?

The Coyotes saga continues in Glendale, this time with some new faces and strong words for the franchise.

Glendale mayor-elect Jerry Weiers wasted no time framing his view of a more fiscally responsible city after his victory Tuesday night-- and he put the Coyotes on the spot right away.

"We all love the Coyotes and the Cactus League but we cannot sacrifice our way of life so they can maintain theirs," said Mayor-elect Jerry Weiers. "Glendale is not your cash register."

Despite the fact that Glendale voters decided not to repeal their recently approved sales tax hike, Weiers wants the public to understand that there are no sacred cows here. Nothing is untouchable in the budget.

If he would have mentioned this in his pandering for votes I wonder what the chance of him being elected would have been??

Probably pretty high. Sadly the folks in Glendale strike me as more than a bit looney toons. The City and citizenry seem to not understand having the Yotes and the Indian Casino are both huge plusses for them. People might actually want to visit Glendale with them, without....Glendale is just another Litchfield Park.

Not to mention Glendale's City government for years was pushing for Light Rail extension west on the I-10, then up the 101 to hook up to Westgate. Of course that means PHX would be paying for most of it (why would PHX go for this dumb deal Glendale?) and LRT would miss out on Downtown Glendale and other areas for redevelopment opportunities. Luckily it now sounds like Glendale has been convinced an E-W extension through Glendale makes more sense.

What part of what I said are you taking issue with? Or are you just trolling as usual?

Do you think the Coyotes in Glendale is bad for Glendale? Do you think the casino is bad for Glendale? Do you think public transit running along a sensible alignment is bad for Glendale?

If you do, you're probably as stupid as the Mayor of Glendale.

What Glendale needs to realize, is IF the Coyotes leave, Westgate becomes a ghost town for the majority of the year...

Outside of 10 Sundays of Cardinal homes games, and a handful of concerts (which BTW, is not the cash cow it user to be), there really is not a lot to do.. and considering how much money has been put into Westgate and how big it is to the city, they can't let that happened..

The problem is the Coyotes and potential owners know this too, which is why no deal is good for the city, so they really are stuck between a rock and a hard place..

No matter how many times I here the Glendale council lie through their rotting teeth about how they will be fine if the coyotes leave by booking concerts and other events, they are SOOO completely full of it..

I live here too.. I don't see that at all.. Have you ever been there throughout the week.. its a ghost town.. I use to go to the saddle club every Monday and Tuesday.. Talk to ANYONE who is a manger or works there, it is a NIGHTMARE when there are not events.. Even the weekends are hit and miss...

If you believe the Glendale Council and westgate will be fine without the Coyotes, that is totally your opinion...

But form people who work there and see it daily, they all rely heavily on the coyotes bringing 45+ games to them, it is VERY important...

We gonna have to disagree then..

Nevermind what store managers, property owners, economists, etc. say, Gee! says he sees plenty of people at Westgate...so Glendale should be fine.

There's not nearly enough population density currently near Westgate to support it without a major anchor tenant. The 'Yotes are that tennant, the movie theater helps, but it can't do it alone. Unfortunately when the economy faltered and all of the mid density condos and apartments that were supposed to spring up around Westgate didn't happen, it made the Coyotes being there even more important.

I definitely agree on the importance of the coyotes to westgate ... IMO it's not even something you can come close to arguing ....... there is a difference between having people there and having the place jam packed for 50+ nights - many of them midweek

Although I'm not sure what you were getting at bringing Litchfield Park into this ....... LP is a great small city .... aside from being clustered in the vast phoenix metro it couldn't be any more different than Glendale .... it has a 3.3 square mile footprint, relatively small population, great schools, etc

Glendale is massive - one of the largest cities in the state and it will fill out over the next 10-15 years ......... even without westgate they northern part of glendale, the getting better downtown area and the potential on the western fringe are there

However, the viability of westgate is very important to the city - a lot of empty land along there that has good freeway access .... lot of opportunity to stabalize a tax draw, keep development fees high and make the property "desireable" ..... without westgate being viable (and without an anchor tenant it really isn't) it will greatly diminish the revenue draws from that adjacent land

More info on the "Gee! is wrong, Westgate does need the Coyotes to do well financially" front:.

I'm might not know what trolling is.. But I imagine it to be something like the above..

I said what I said and left it alone..

The things you are talking about isn't exactly what I was I was referring to.. I wasn't talking about during games.. Some didnt agree with that and I said just have to disagree..

The new outlet mall will help bring visitors to Westgate.

There is a more upscale mall about a mile away. This is a discounted outlet mall. It is not going to draw standing only crowds at the bars 50 times a year. In fact, it may deter that since you are going to see a lot more of this there.

Stores didn't open their doors until 9 a.m., but many serious shoppers showed up hours before that.

"Open, open open," yelled one woman outside Nike.

Shoppers started lining up around the popular clothing store H & M around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Many people camped out after hearing the store was giving out $100-$300 gift cards to the first 100 people.

The duo ditched school to check out the outlets, but told ABC15 mom said it was okay.

Again, not the bar hoping, entertainment district type of shoppers.

Have fun, this is what they turned that neighborhood into. Old bitties will be snaking your Cardinals parking spots for that sale on corn removers.

Banky ..... You obviously know nothing of the tanger outlets and there isn't a more upscale mall an hour away

That said it's a nice supplemented to the area, but cannot replace an anchor tenant for the stadium

City council is discussing the revised agreement tonight and should vote on it next week .... Need the new cba to get done though .... I honestly think that is part of the holdup

I thought he was right on about the Tanger Outlets. :)

And Arrowhead Mall is pretty close, isn't it?

desert sky mall is about 5 miles away (far from upscale).... arrowhead mall is about 10 miles away (again, not upscale but a solid standard mall)

there will definitely be spill over to westgate for food/drink ........ although not nearly as much as a sporting event

there is a lot of income in the SW Valley and the white trash teenager or old ladies looking for corn removers that he seems to be painting isn't exactly itching to go shopping at Coach, Brooks Brothers, Michael Kors, J.Crew, White House/Black Market, etc - outlet or not

"outlet" makes all the difference...the sound of banjoes might be a little less pronounced, but Honey Boo's mom is still shopping there.

except that you are wrong - "outlets" aren't even outlets any more stocked full of great deals on irregular merchandise

any mall is going to draw a pretty wide cast of characters .... but you'll definitely get normal folks there as well ... in fact, my wife and mother in law are headed over there now and we had another friend who decided against stopping in as traffic was backed up 3/4 of the way down the exit and the lot was packed

I think 4-5 of my coworkers who live in the area have already been

I'll definitely go as well and see a lot of people who look like me grabbing dress shirts, shoes, hats and toys

If they aren't careful they're going to be completely over run by middle class suburban white people with 6 figure household incomes

Any trip to any outlet I have made in the last 5 years has confirmed that the merchandise is of lesser quality. Otherwise, it would not be at an outlet.

some yes, some no

some is "out of season", some is specially made for the outlet and made cheaper

some stores have closed down traditional retail outlets and are now located in outlet malls (like stride rite locally - they've shut down at places like Arrowhead and now the closest one is Tempe Mills)

doesn't change the fact that a couple people who aren't living in the state, who have no idea on the demographics or shopping availability in the area, no clue to the stores being presented, the development itself or really anything about the project probably aren't in the best position to grab the broad brush

the crowd there isn't going to look any different than the crowd that westgate caters to ...... both are kind of plastic, candy land type developments

it's not like you're pairing one of the mastros restaurants, an ulta lounge/club and a toys r us outlet and looking to create a synergy

you have run of the mill, middle america shops, bars & restaurants at westgate and at tanger ..... which makes sense because the area is pretty run of the mill, middle america .... kind of like the people who go to hockey games, arena concerts, monster truck shows, pro football games and the variety of other events they have there
