Kyler Murray makes weak closing argument for second contract

The primary goal for Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray on Monday night was, obviously, to win his first ever NFL playoff game. An important secondary objective lingered just below the surface.

With Murray eligible for a second contract, he needed a strong performance to position himself for a major deal in the 2022 offseason.

Monday night’s showing will make it very difficult for Murray to get Josh Allen money or Dak Precott money or Patrick Mahomes money or any money close to the money paid at the top of the market. The most jarring aspect of Murray’s performance came from the lack of runs. Two carries, six yards.

With the season on the line, two carries for six yards can’t be the final stat line for the most dynamic running quarterback in football.

Look at what the Bills did on Saturday night. Josh Allen set the tone with a 26-yard sprint on the opening drive. Utilizing the run threat gets defenses on their heels, opening up the passing game just a little bit more because they’re watching and waiting to be gashed again by a fleet-footed quarterback who decides to tuck and run, either by design before the snap or on the fly.

Two carries. Six yards. It can’t happen, especially with receiver DeAndre Hopkins not present to draw extra attention.

Sad really, he never had a chance, his fate was decided on Kingsbury clipboard. First 15 plays scripted, don’t go very far on multiple 3 and outs behind by 21! -3 yards on offense! the first run play chase Edmonds was picked up and hurled 5 yards backwards to where he started! 2nd was Murray following Conner through the middle! 3rd was Conner out of the endzone still 14 points down late in the 2nd quarter! Yea baby, shortest pick six in playoff history down 21!

makes me throw up in my mouth. Conner made pro bowl as 2nd string back up, after thought. Does that inspire any confidence in our coaches talent evaluation ability? We finally got a run game coordinator this year, on paper! Yea our game plan was to outperform the best pass defense, 2 best pass rushers in history at the top of their game, without running the damned ball. screw balance, let them pin their ears back and bring it on!

We can blame, the oline, defense and QB! Nobody will notice, our lame AZ media will never ask why? in the presser, they never have hundreds of times before. through 4 coaches. Coach will just tell them we don’t know why we didn’t compete, will have to look at the tape. Never mind it’s the same tape fir 15 consecutive years! If they press will tell them the fans don’t know nothing about football, they don’t see the same tape or know the inside scoop, ignorant peasants. arrogance always works on the bill payers.

yea Kyler has his blessings and his burdens, could have audibles to say 30 runs or something and had a chance to compete. Give him a balanced game plan, maybe start your pro bowl running back, against Aaron Donald and Von Miller, maybe just maybe our box scores would look more like the winners this playoffs and less like the losers.

never been more obvious in the history of earth. Carr had like 53 passes to 13 Jacob runs, cowboys the same with a fresh eke and pollard, gonna dub it the Pete the puma defensive game plan, I’m gonna catch me a lil rabbit and eat him up, Kyler aint no bugs bunny, no matter how the media portrays him, he needs the same things all wabbits need to be successful. And he is not provided an environment for success.

His weakest argument was failing to get off the bench to go check on his teammate who was possibly paralyzed laying unconscious on the field. PATHETIC. Yea a few will say his head was in a tablet and trying to keep head in the game. This game was already over. Literally no excuse. Some things are just bigger then a game.

Murray doesn't need to read a defense given his talents (accept it hater), was he checking out 1-800-Sandals for next vacation?

I wonder if Keim is about to pull a James Jones and drop an Ayton on this offseason.

Don't we still have him under control for two more years with the Franchise tag?

What are the realistic options if Murray declines to step on the field until week 1 without a contract. Entire regime will be gone by week 6.

I think Murray has the upper hand however weak it may be over Kliff and Keim here.

Looks equally bad for McCoy. Horrible optics.

Yes there are things obviously bigger than the game, but it's kind of ironic that this comment and this is brought up on a thread based on his performance or lack thereof, and if he's worthy of a second contract. Let's also not forget the threads and posts, ad nauseam, this season talking about him not paying enough attention on the sidelines. The dude literally can't win with some people on this board.

I have seen several questioning why KK did not start Conner over Edmonds or did not have Conner run more often and early. Conner was DNP & limited the whole week with a broken rib. He was wearing extra pads under the jersey over the rib area on the left side. He could have played in pain and KK was controlling his playing time & loads. Broken ribs can kill a person if they stick into the organs.

please don’t take this personally but that is bull crap, he was lead blocking for Murray, playing full back like the 2nd 3 and out. Chase had 1 carry and was hurled into the backfield On the first 3 and out. Conner and chase both broke for first downs way too late in the game to even matter. conner had his first attempt out of our own endzone right before we went down by by 21 on the pick 6.

there is no excuse for Conner making the pro bowl as a 2nd string back up. there is no excuse for Conner not given the chance to establish the run early in any game this year.
there is no excuse for not running the ball against the nfls best pass defense facing 2 of the best all time pass rushers of all time, at the top of their game.

there is no excuse for cardinals to do this same thing for 15 freaking years, no excuse for Keim not demanding balance through 4 head coaches now. 2 of them winning super bowls running the ball in Pittsburg! The only time has had success is while at least trying to establish a run game. Like every other football team in the history of earth. We played one dimensional and got obliterated on the first Monday night playoff game ever.
Forever cards black Monday, fire Keim , get a boss in here, not a salary cap, talent guru. hire somebody that knows the fundamentals of pee wee football.

Things will never change here unless Kingsbury and Kyler learn how to play professional football and not the college game.
Kliffs play calling and Kylers decisions all worked in college because of wider hash marks and limited talent.
Kyler chooses the wrong wr so often it’s ridiculous. Even when he’s successful it’s only because he threw and absolutely perfect pass a or a miraculous catch. He believes he can do that every time and he can’t. Nobody can. He needs to understand an easy 8 yard completion is better than an incomplete 20 yard pass that had a 2% chance of completion.
Kingsbury has to learn the same thing. He should , but won’t scale back on the no huddle crap every damn play. He needs to understand a 2 yard run in on the first drive will eventually be a 5 yard run later in the game with some persistence. He needs to understand trick plays work when you have an opponent on their heels. Don’t go empty backfield against a d-line that is owning you and if you do it better be a play that Kyler gets the ball out of his hand in 2.5 seconds or less.

This is not the NCAA.

I think Murray has the upper hand however weak it may be over Kliff and Keim here.

This grossly misunderstands how the NFL and coaches work. The Cards can lose 41-11 with or without Kyler Murray. If he holds out of training camp the next two seasons when he's under contract, his reputation (which is all he has aside from some Very Meaningful high school championships) would be completely tarnished (until his first game with 300 passing yards and 3 TDs).

Kliff went 2-1 with Colt McCoy last season; he could do so again.

Lets not forget he was MVP leading candidate through 8 games or whatever. So he has the talent, but it's his know-it-all type attitude which is the most worrying

LOL. I love the "Let's not forget that he had a Really Good Stretch before he did nothing to help the team win over the second half of the year and was also injured" argument.
