I've said it before and I'll say it again.
This "poor character" stuff is nonsense. He's a guy that had some issues. Whether they be mental or substance related. Probably both. That doesn't make him a "poor character". If anything the fact that he put a massive amount of effort in to get back to football shape and stay clean shows great character.
Not hiring guys because of past off field issues like this is weak and it's something good teams don't do. We fired Philon for a he said/she said he still hasn't been charged for. Patrick Chung was arrested on drug charges a few weeks later and Belichick had him starting the next week.
If a player makes you better you sign him. If he causes issues in the locker room or relapses you cut his ass. It's not hard.

He has a 6 year history in this thread and it goes to as late as 2018. That is hardly enough time of "staying clean" to be confident that he won't have more issues later.

Skipping your entire "character doesn't count" narrative for a second, talent is useless if it's not on the field. Signing a guy like Aldon Smith also requires you to have another starting caliber player at his position, because one minor slip up gets him back on the suspended list. It's not like he's just on one protocol, either. Just about anything iffy he does means you're stuck filling a roster spot and starting OLB position mid-season.

I've watched for years, this board pile on guys with one incident and completely assail a man's character....but in this instance it's completely warranted.

Whatever man. What some guy does as a dumb kid shouldn't stop him working forever unless he hurts somebody else.
There are many teams took on guys with issues. It's actually become somewhat of a joke. Guys like Rueben Foster get cut from their team and within a day Washington picks him up. Somebody would have done the same with Guice if it wasn't for his injury history. Getting cut is like being baptized, it absolves you of all past misdemeanors.
Someone said above "He can't play if he's not on the field" well, he certainly can't play if you don't sign him.
He's getting $2m with no guarantees. You bring him in, use him as a rotation piece. If he doesn't work you cut him and bring Fitts off the PS and you are no worse off. It's literally the definition of all upside and no downside.
The Raiders did the same last year with Incognito. They signed him for pennies and he was one of the best Guards in the league and a team leader.
Someone, for sure, will sign Antonio Brown if/when he clears. Gordon has had a number of suspensions and always come back.

(We'll all just conveniently forget Fitz's 2008 domestic abuse allegation and restraining order which would be treated much differently in the media today)

Was he a "dumb kid" just 2 years ago at 28? He doesn't have to be a lost cause for the rest of his life, but I can certainly understand why a lot of teams didn't even look in his direction in the off season as well.

You’re talking apples to oranges. That being said chemistry in a locker room is huge. You don’t sign known head cases just because they can play. He got into a beef with his fiance and she took out a TRO. He wasn't charged with anything. No crime committed. In fact it's a prime example of how when the same thing happened with Fitz it was glossed over, whereas today it would be headline news.
He hasn't had a drink or drug related incident since his release by the Niners in 2015.

Neither does Smith. He's never been charged for domestic violence and the weapon possession charge was dropped to a misdemeanor. He's hardly a hardened criminal.
Quinnen Williams and Ed Oliver were both arrested for unlawful possession of a weapon this year. Ed Oliver had a DUI to go with it. Chris Herndon had a DUI last year. Should they be cut? They are all still with their teams.
Oliver and Williams were carrying weapons. Smith just had them in his home.
It's funny because no players, coaches, media or anyone else connected to the NFL has any issue with these players getting 2nd chances. It's always just fans. It's almost as if fans expect some unrealistic level of human behavior from players because they have money or privilege.
I simply don't see it that way. If the player has taken steps to correct themselves, if they come into the building and impress you. If they work hard in camp and do everything right to make the 53 where is the risk?
If they don't do that then you cut them. It's pretty easy.
You think if Smith has a 15 sack season for $2m any fans across the league will be talking about his past? Most of them will be saying "Damn I wished we signed him".
Do you think if we did sign him and against the Niners he had the same 9 tackle, 2 TFL, 1 sack game for us fans would be going on about his past? Please.
All people care about is football. And all this rank hypocrisy here is purely because he is playing somewhere else. If he was here fans would be saying what a great "Keim time" signing he was and how he's changed his ways and deserves another chance. This board would be awash with talk of how great a CJ / Smith combo is going to be and what a bargain he was for $2m.
That's a pretty tough one to dispute imo. It's kind of built into human nature that we exhibit those biased perceptions. Suppose you have a close family member that commits a certain crime, that individual will put less value on its importance in society when others do the same...or at the very least have more forgiveness towards it. This is how I believe it works with us fanatics at times as well.

Completely untrue. If my team was full of criminals, I would cease watching them or spending my money on them until they weren't.
Being a fan of a team that rarely makes headlines for the wrong reason is a good thing. People who run jump and catch well don't deserve my money if they're assbags.
