Sun Devils will no longer use hostesses in recruiting

Arizona State football is discontinuing its use of female hostesses in recruiting.

Coach Dirk Koetter said Monday that the decision was made in late February after a review of recruiting.

"Our recruiting group did fine," Koetter said. " . . . But with the changing landscape in college athletics right now, there is a decent chance it's going to get legislated out.

"No. 2, we already have responsibility for 110 players. Whether your group is 20 like it was this year or 35 like it was, that's just extra responsibility. It's just tough to govern it."

ASU Athletic Director Gene Smith is on a NCAA task force that will recommend new recruiting rules to the Division I Management Council on April 20.

NCAA President Myles Brand appointed the task force last month because of recent allegations of misconduct at several universities, including Colorado.

The State Press, ASU's student newspaper, in December 2002 quoted former hostesses who said underage drinking and consensual sex occurred between recruits and women in the program. The program since then has become smaller and more tightly controlled.

Koetter said that coaches and player-hosts can fill some of the duties of the hostesses and that student ambassadors who regularly give campus tours might be used to do the same for recruits if scheduling can be arranged.

"The biggest loss is on game day when we have recruits visiting, and hostesses sat with the players and their families at Sun Devil Stadium. . . . That's where that group was a huge help, and we're going to miss that part of it."

My choice of words for the title of this thread is based on a State Press article on this topic (so don't flame me PC police).

Eh, to be honest I didn't really like the fact that my university was allowing this. It's time to move college athletics to a new century, not continue traditions of the past.

Look at what is going on with the University of Colorado? If I'm an Admin. at ASU I'd want to steer clear of those type of scandals.

It has nothing to do with being PC; prospective players/students shouldn't come to our university for the promise of getting hot tail. With Univ.s like ASU and UofA, the tail factor should be quite apparent, but not pushed on guys...

I'm sure if I was Gene Smith I probably would have made a similar decision, but at the same time, the girls job description was to host these players, not sleep with them. Is ASU going to change its policy in regards to opposite-sex hosts with all prospective students? Are 17 year old male prospective students going to be given the tour of the school only by undergraduate males? I'd see the problem if these hostesses slept around as part of their job description, but I know UA tells their girls that sexual activity is prohibited. But if a female sleeps with a recruit after her hosting job is done, I really do not see the problem as it is an act between two consenting adults.

I hate to say it, but the "hostesses" do look like "ho's"...

I call a spade, a spade. It might not be the same at ASU, but these girls legitimately look like sorority girls all done up to catch the attention of prospective athletes.

Long memory, eh?

When did I tell you it was called A Touch of Class? I have diarhea of the mouth when I come on this board. My girlfriend would KILL me if she knew that I talked about her job on here so much.

I don't know if ASU's athletic department could pay for any of the girls. Between lawsuits and less revenue from poor attendance, I doubt they could even afford the agency fee ($150 just to get the girl to show up)...
