Husker quarterback given permission to transfer

Husker quarterback given permission to transfer.

April 18, 2005
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Nebraska quarterback Joe Dailey has been given permission to transfer after falling from starter last season to fourth-stringer this spring.

Cornhuskers coach Bill Callahan said he was disappointed in Dailey's decision to leave but wished him luck. Callahan and other coaches met with the rising junior from Jersey City, N.J. on Monday, telling Dailey that it was not yet decided who would be the starting quarterback next season.

``We have not named a starter and nothing at that position is etched in stone, however, Joe feels that it is in his best interest to explore other opportunities of playing at another institution,'' Callahan said in a release.

Dailey, who was also a team captain last season, went into Saturday's Red-White game behind Zac Taylor, Beau Davis and Joe Ganz on the depth chart. He was 7-of-20 for 121 yards, with one interception returned for a touchdown in the scrimmage.

After the game, he told reporters he was hampered this spring by a shoulder sprain.

Callahan took over the Cornhuskers last season, scrapped their option offense and installed a West Coast system with Dailey as the quarterback.

Dailey started all 11 games as a sophomore, but the new offense sputtered. He completed 153-of-310 passes for 2,025 yards, with 17 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. Nebraska finished 5-6, it's first losing season in 43 years.
