I don't think the defensive problems are scheme related at all. It is 100% talent.
Caldwell = Our best player on the line by far but is extremely fragile. Cannot count on him to play game in and game out.
Jordan Hill = average player a back up in most big-time program D lines around the nation, not big enough to stop the run not fast enough to get pressure often choose the correct gaps to fill but is eating dirt. Out here the fans seem to love him but I think he is overrated.
Will Kofe = Not good, chooses the wrong gaps often stumbling over Holyfield and Hill, takes bad angles, tackles with his arms and high. Poor
special teams player also, average JC quality at best.
Holyfield = Average to below average player...average against the pass rush, below average against the run another one who makes a lot mistakes in gap play and get beat several times a game by his man, most Pac 10 teams would not start this guy.
Mike Talbot = a joke, a FB and should be playing FB, he has no speed on end, gets beat almost evey time, he is an ok tackler he at least goes lower than most of the other guys but still he is way too slow, he is a bad player and I doubt he would play on any other line in the PAC or WAC. it's hard to rip him because he is a FB but he is not a good player...I expect him to therefore get 5 more years of eligibility because he is so bad.
Linebackers are good but these guys have to often hit the exact gap to stop the run because our Dline is so poor at getting any contain or penetration. If they miss it's often 8- 10 yards before Cantonese makes the play.
It's about the talent and our front seven needs a massive upgrade here to be able to win consistently in the PAC 10. I just worry that Dirk is perfectly satisfied with sticking in Dixie boys and converted fullbacks into the line.
