So Nikki D'Andrea, a writer at the Phoenix New Times, apparently caught wind of a rumor that the NBA was instituting a Tattoo Cap in 2011 that would restrict teams from having more than 60% of their players' arms and necks from having tattoos.
So she googled it, found a blog on
CBS Sports talking about it, which was spawned from a
Con Chapman article. So she ran with the story, got a nice
gallery created of some of the Suns' players tats, and her Editor green-lit the story for the
FRONT PAGE. Just in time for AllStar Weekend.
What she didn't do was her job.
Con Chapman is a satire writer for the
Gerbil News Network. The story was a joke. She even borrowed quotes from the spoof story, where David Stern says,
Quote:
|
We feel it is important that our players not scare the bejesus out of affluent demographic groups with gangsta-style tattoos," David Stern said at a press conference here today. "Otherwise we might as well name the next two expansion franchises the 'Crips' and the 'Bloods',"
|
adding
Quote:
|
“A tasteful ‘Mom’ on your bicep will not count against the cap.”
|
This is precious as well:
Quote:
|
Teams could free up cap space by trading a power forward from an "urban" school for a shooting guard from Brigham Young or a flat-footed center from Gonzaga.
|
The story was published until some savvy reporters
contacted her to see what she was smoking.
New Times has since taken the article down from their website, revamped it, and
explained themselves in another article. Not admitting they failed to do their jobs, but that they were caught in a hoax. They even state they thought it was a joke, but ran with the story instead.
No fact checking was done, calls to the NBA and other sources were not returned, so they didnt bother quoting anyone directly for the article. She googled the rumor and found one source to use for her article. The story was green lit by the editors without any due dilligence.
Not sure what is on the printed newstands now, but if anyone sees it be sure to check it out.
There are so many red flags in the article that it was a joke that you have to be born yesterday to not catch on. If you know anyone who advertises in the New Times, I would suggest you tell them to think twice about investing in this POS publication.
And if you want to tell Nikki how you feel about her efforts, use this link
