It's good to see Nash make his country proud. He seemed to take pride in that in his interview today. Good for him.

This question has probably already been answered somewhere, but is Nash the first foreign player to win the award?

No, Hakeem and Tim Duncan were first

I forgot about Olajuwon. I had a feeling there was someone obvious that I was overlooking. Thanks.
I didn't count Duncan, because any loophole that allows him to play for the U. S. Olympic team disqualifies him from being considered "foreign," in my book.

By that standard, Olajuwon is an American, too...

Hey, right! What's going on here?
Forgive me, I am severely jet-lagged.
Okay, let's put it this way. The Virgin Islands is a U. S. Territory, isn't it? Can you be a "citizen" of the Virgin Islands? Obviously there's a significant distinction between Duncan and Olajuwon, so what exactly is it? Probably in a couple of days I'll be clear-headed enough to figure it out for myself, but since I'm impatient, maybe someone can help me out now.

Duncan was born in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He's has been an American citizen, and Hakeem was a citizen when he won the award (I think).
What the media are saying is that Nash is the first non-American to be named NBA MVP. I think some local sportswriters are misinterpreting that and confusing the issue.

Nash is a Canadian citizen, so maybe that's involved in the distinction. The same for Larry Walker (National League MVP) and Eric Gagne (National League Cy Young) who remain Canadian, as does - Jacques Villeneuve who won the Formula One Drivers Championship.
Up here, we also like to claim LENNOX LEWIS as our heavy weight champion. As a dual citizen of Canada and Great Britain, he won Olympic Gold for Canada. Lennox's mother lives just outside of Toronto and he's often seen doing the restaurants and bars in Toronto.
