Hey Shaq, Hollinger projects you as the leagues #24 center!

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/hollin...pos=9&start=15

Lower than Curry, Humphries, Noah, Nesto, Turiaf (the Lakers second stringer), and the powerful 6-9 backup center from Toronto--Kris Humphries.

Let that be a little bee in your bonnet.

He also rated you #126 in the league. I suppose that means you should be third string on most teams.

What was Hollinger thinking especially considering it is hard to name more than 5-10 centers better than Shaq even considering his age. Also many of the players mentioned are not even centers. There are not a lot of good centers in the NBA right now... at least true centers.

FYI, Turiaf is in Golden State now. Either way, this is just ridiculous. Of course so is Hollinger.

Given his performance over the last few years, it's really not all that ridiculous. I don't know if everyone read the Complete Profile link, but Hollinger does go more in depth on the reasons for the low ranking (some of which are both valid and a little surprising), and admits that a lot of what can be expected from Shaq this season and next depends on his attitude and conditioning. Didn't we all know that already?

Welcome to the East Coast. Other than the Lakers and Spurs, they just don't watch much Western basketball. Oh they gush about all thee 50 plus teams, but their games area all on too late. This means that the Shaq these guys remmeber was the oft injured Shaq of two/three years ago.

Last night gave a hint of the Shaq we'll see this year with 21 points and 10 rebounds in 23 (or so) minutes. He's setting up much closer to the basket than last year where he can just catch and dunk. How many defenders can push him out of the low block without help?

Good thing there's no salary parameter in his rankings.

Seriously, what center ranked above Shaq would you not do an even swap for when you consider salaries?

That's pointless because $20 million is so outrageous. A more interesting question is who would you take for one year independent of salaries. After Dwight Howard, KG, and Duncan; it is a not easy to answer. Bynum may have a great career ahead, but not for one year. Gasol is not top defender and Chandler is very limited offensively. Bosh is not a center. Oden has not played a regular season game yet. Last night they gave up using Horford on Shaq.

My read on it is that Hollinger gets lost in the numbers and doesn't relate them to what is going on when they are playing.

Seriously?

Youre saying you would trade Shaq for Bynum, Gasol, Chandler or Bosh, even it was only for one year?

Oden I could understand.

Hollinger is a Laker homer and a Suns hater. If Kobe were to be traded here, he would automatically become the 15th best SG in the league.

Take his stupid PER ratings with a grain of salt. They make no sense

He does that that Amare may be undervalued at #3 in the league.

Huh? Isn't it Al Horford of Atlanta Hawks at #14? Didn't he just play Shaq head to head? 10 points and 6 rebounds in 22 minutes vs 21 points and 10 rebounds in 23 minutes of Shaq. Exactly what expected from a Hollinger ranking.

Wow, I am flabbergasted at how stupid every single post in this thread is. These rankings aren't just Hollingers opinion, they're based on a statistic, Player Efficiency Rating (PER). How can you say things like he's just bashing the Suns, or he doesn't watch much west coast basketball, when Amare Stoudemire is ranked #1!? Hollinger is just taking last years PER and making (generally reasonable) prognostications on what that players PER might be this year. Being #24 in PER among Centers does NOT mean Hollinger 'projects (Shaq) as the leagues #24 center!"

PER isn't a perfect stat, but it is Hollingers pet stat, get used to it, or don't read his articles. But this article IS NOT saying Shaq is the leagues #24 Center.

finally some sense in this thread.

hollinger is just saying that shaq's efficiency is 24th in the league, which is what the PER stat ranks. He is by no means saying that shaq is not as good as 23 other centers in the league. I think his predictions are somewhat reasonable. He's basing his ranking of shaq on the fact that he is almost done with basketball combined with the fact that amare will be doing most of the work in our front court, which are both rational.
