Nash:

Does this team need to learn how to run? They had the pre-camp workouts to work on running the break.

My problem with the Suns shooting was that guys like Marion felt they had a green light to shoot threes in crunch situations, but was not very good at it (34.1 career and very inconsistent). Hill was pushed hard to take threes at the start of the season and shot just 33 of 104 (31.7%).

IMHO, trading Marion helped their three point shooting percentage.

Nov - 37.6%
Dec - 36.2%
Jan - 40.4%
Feb - 39.3% (Marion traded)
Mar - 42.8%
Apr - 40.8%

I suppose it is my "glass half full view of the world, but I don't think Bell will be used much as a driver on a team with Hill, Barnes, Barbosa, and Dragic on the team. I do think there will be more use of screen to open up shots.

1) marion and 3pt shooting: was it improved because marion left or because amare started playing PF and destroying everyone with 29ppg and 58% FG's. WHen you have a guy like that running wild in the lane, the the 3 pter willn more likely be open. Or could it be that Hill, the worst 3pt shooter(32%) was injured and GG(37%) played in his place at the same time(signed just before the trade)? This statement is a typical oversimplification of a complex subject.

2) Nash playing 30 mins: I'd like to see that if the suns can win doing it, I have my doubts. Also porter talking about calling plays from the sideline, said nothing about doing it only when nash sits. Perhaps he can coax drexler out of retirement and just give the ball to him, like old times.

You really WANT more complexity?

My read on it was that Marion was told to dial it back and Hill simply decided on his own to stop to shooting threes. It was nice that Gordan shot well (19 of 50 in 22 games), but mostly the Suns high shooting percentage came from their big three: Nash, Bell and Barbosa. Did they get more open looks because of Amare or just that they made better use of their open looks that were being wasted. Porter seems to think that at least some of it was that having poor outside shooters taking shots is a mistake, but we won't know if that will work until they play a while.

If Dragic struggles, then it will be hard to reduce Nash's minutes. But failure to do so will doom the team when the playoffs come.

The key will be that they won't run after as many made baskets, so they will have a chance to run called plays. But when the Suns run, I really doubt he's going to tell Nash to stop so Porter can call a play.

You seem to believe that Porter is an idiot. Right now he's slowing the game down to prepare for games where it is slow.

Suns guard Steve Nash said. “On offense, we’re slowing everything down just so we can learn to play at this pace.”

Nash is relying on general manager Steve Kerr’s edict that the Suns will still do what they’ve done best and Porter’s offensive teachings are an add-on to help them paint with a broader brush.

“We need to have more structure and more options, but we’re obviously still a team that’s going to get out and run in transition.

The game is complex, otherwise idiots could coach it, and casual fans could just look up stats could completely understand it. But if you want to distill it into the simplest possible form go ahead. Some people just cant handle complexity.

How complex is this, since you seem intent on ignoring it?

Nash is relying on suns GM edict from months ago? This "edict" was a statement to the press. If you suck up and take for gospel every statement to the press, you are a bit green behind the gills. Does this mean that porter has not told nash that they are still going to run or does it mean that nash doesnt know whats going on? Is there a communication problem? I for one wasnt born yesterday, it is a little disturbing that nash is "relying" on a statement to the press rather than communication with his own coach? SOmetimes I do ignore meaningless quotes, especially when the context of those quotes are less than reassuring. I guess that you dont read quotes the same as I do. The english language is complex, especially with political statements to the press. I remember reading that nash shoots almost 60% from 3pt range on the pull up jumper in transition, and yes, it happens in less than 7 seconds. It sounds to me like that wont be happening much anymore, and I'll bet he has interpreted it the same as me.

No I didnt listen to it, I expect that it is just tinkering time, and without barbs, stat and a settled rotation I dont expect to get a meaningful read of things. Once these guys get into shape and the rotation is settled a bit I will start paying attention.

There was discussion during the game of fan fears about the game slowing down, but the team then ran off some fast breaks.

I thought preseason were for preparation for regular season and wins and losses there were meaningless. As such, it's perfect time to work on deficiencies of the team like half court sets, which we believe is necessary if we don't want to see the DA type of fading in playoffs again. The core players already master how to play fast, they don't need to learn it via practice and preseason games as much as they do for half court sets. Isn't that what Nash was saying in that quote?

It's exclusively DA's philosophy thinking, that if you worked on alternatives then you were unable to commit fully to 100% running, and without such commitment, DA style wouldn't fully be effective. Yet, we have seen four years in a row how that approach can achieve for the Suns and apparently most of us aren't satisfied anymore.

Yes, but that leaves nothing to freak out about.

this is my take on porters appraoch so far as well. This is why nash isnt shooting, diaw isnt passing, shaq isnt rebounding, and barnes and tucker are shooting 3's. They are all working on their weaknesses, kudos to porter. The stats and W's are meaningless, as everyone is working on weaknesses and playing inferior competition(opponents bench players).
