It's almost certainly erroneous to say that Houston succumbed to microfracture surgery. He had knee injuries which the surgery was not able to overcome but more than likely it helped his condition somewhat.
Of course, it is possible that the surgery itself sometimes aggravates the condition but I've never heard of a case where that was mentioned. Another possibility is that the rehab path following the surgery is sometimes the culprit - either in itself or because it's so difficult that people are very inclined to take shortcuts and that causes problems.
