Shootouts coming to the NHL
http://www.thn.com/en/headlines/deta...t=954945254360
Once the NHL returns, shootouts will be used after a 5 minute 4on4 overtime period. This is for the regular season only.
The ultra-hockey purists won't like it, but personally, I can't stand ties. I can't stand paying a large sum of money to go to a game that gets left unresolved. I would prefer a longer overtime period instead, but Ill accept the shootout.

Good move, IMO - ties suck!

They should have a 10 minute overtime. Overtime games rock.

I didn't click on the link, but is a point still awarded to the losing team in a game that is tied at the end of regulation?

Dear NHL,
I see that you've decided to go to shootouts. You must now understand that fans want to see the players' skills. Therefore, please cut down all the clutching and grabbing, too. That'd be great. Thanks.

I see both sides of the shootout debate, but I hate the OL point more than anything else. Instead of playing for a tie in overtime, teams simply play for an OL point in the third. It seems like a power play is the only way to see good hockey in the final 5 minutes of regulation.

Everyone hates ties...but is a shoot out the answer? It's like the NBA deciding games with a 3 point competition. I like going 4 on 4. I think they should just extend that longer. Or maybe they should go to 3-3 if they're still tied.

They should play until someone wins like every other major sport not named Soccer.

Personally, I'd feel better losing out on the playoffs to a team with more shootout victories than one with more regulation ties. The regulation tie is just another symptom and reenforcer of overly defensive hockey. I'd be happy if they went back to 5 mins of OT with no points for losing.
